Lithic analysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lithic analysis involves measuring various physical aspects of stone tools as well as observing the tool type, its characteristics, the presence features such as cortex, and the like.
The term 'lithic analysis' can technically refer to any study of humanly-modified stone, but in its usual sense it is applied to archaeological material, either of the ground or knapped variety, particularly stone tools.
The best known lithic typology is the series established by Francois Bordes (1950) for the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic of France, where sixty three types of stone tools were defined on the basis of manufacturing techniques and morphological characteristics.

Lithics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
Lithics in archaeology cover a vaste range of material from building stones to gemstones.
Although in theory lithics are the easiest to provenance, practice shows that it is often difficult to match artefact to outcrop.
The normal method for archaeological lithic studies is transmitted light petrography using standard thin sections.

 Walls Lithics
Other generalizations about Walls area lithics include the attribution of small chipped and ground chisels, adzes, or celts and chunky stones to the Walls phase, while sandstone abraders and chipped stone scrapers "appear to be absent" (Smith in Nash 1972:iv).
As he had stated earlier about Boxtown lithics, he repeats that "such artifact types as projectile points, drills, celts, and chisels, if present at Chucalissa [in the AD 900-1200 interval] are undistinguished from those of later components (Smith 1996:111).
The 40LA19 lithic complex includes Nodena and isosceles points and chipped and polished celts, while 40LA11, interpreted as a seasonal lithic preparation camp on a bluff crest, had abundant fire-shattered grave, failed heat-treated pebble cores, and unfinished projectile points, of unspecified form (Smith 1996:117).

 Cox's Woods Lithics part 3
Although no formal analysis of the lithic sources for chert debitage has been carried out, it was evident during cataloging that much of the utilized raw material was locally available, fossiliferous cherts which had been heat-treated to improve flaking qualities.
The lithic collection also contained 28 (complete and fragmented) bifacially flaked pieces of chert for which no certain functions could be determined.
Finally, a study of the lithic raw material used in the manufacture of triangular projectile points from the Cox's Woods was undertaken as part of a broader investigation of chert utilization during the Oliver Phase.

It’s purpose is to provide a comparative collection of raw lithic material from Colorado and the surrounding region that may be utilized for archaeological research.
The primary role of the collection is to assist researchers in the identification of lithic source areas for materials retrieved from an archaeological context.
By comparing field samples to collections from documented lithic sources in the LMRC it is possible to provide data concerning the use and distribution of lithic resources throughout the region.

Lithic information from across the study area is variable.
The only other possible early Neolithic lithics are few and come from isolated, badly provenanced finds of extremely limited and highly dubious interpretative potential.
There appears to be a general distribution of Neolithic material, consisting of a few scrapers and one leaf shaped arrowhead, from across the study area, although this is obviously biased towards areas which have benefited from some archaeological fieldwork.

By analyzing these lithics it should be possible to determine their true nature.
That is, certain segments or portions of the lithic artifact have been modified; these modifications can be observed to exhibit patterned-occurrence frequencies, positions, and sizes, which reflect what the artifact’s manufacturer may have perceived while creating the artifact.
An example of the integration of known ethnographical functions and prehistoric lithic attribute clusters is evidence in the recognizable patterns that define, for instance, a grinding stone.

East Lydick Creek - Lithic Artifacts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
Analysis of lithic materials recovered at East Lydick Creek focused on three topics: distribution of lithic artifacts relative to hypothesized site components and other subsets of the assemblage; the morphology of formal tools and utilized pieces; and the frequency and distribution of various types of lithic raw materials.
Area A lithics clustered between 15 and 45 cm; Area B lithics were so sparse it is hard to notice any particular distribution but they fell entirely between 10 and 70 cm.
When the lithic assemblage is broken down by area and vertical provenience, however (as shown in Figure 10), the distributions of these materials show a certain amount of patterning that may reflect discrete occupation episodes.

 Concord Lithics - Discussion
The most common such foreign materials, called "exotic lithics", are a fine bluish mudstone from Cambridge, known as argillite; a fine grained fl felsite with small white crystal inclusion from Westwood; and various shades of felsite from Quincy, Saugus, and Marblehead.
Other fine exotic lithics can be found from further away, including chert from upstate New York ("Onandanga chert"), catlinite from Minnesota, and real flint [perhaps from a muskett], and a variety of other fine materials.
Almost all exotic lithic items visible on the surface in eastern Concord are from east of the center on the north side of Bedford Road.

 Clastic Sedimentary Rock Classification
Lithic means "rock" and all mechanically weathered pieces of another rock, or non-feldspar minerals weathered from a rock, are included here.
Lithic fragments are especially abundant in volcanic arc systems (Stage E), but are common in most collision mountain buildings (Stage F and Stage H)
Rocks in these fields have between 10-25 % feldspar or lithics and are thus farther along in their evolution toward pure quartz than feldspathic or lithic rocks.

One pioneer in lithic quarry studies estimated that nine-tenths of the initial reduction materials were left as wastage (Holmes 1919:178), and modern experimental studies tend to support this assertion (e.g., Newcomer 1971).
The ratio of soil to lithics by weight for each of these layers was.81, while the ratio of soil to lithics by volume for each layer was also identical at 2.4.

Most focus on undisturbed lithic sites and use the analysis of refitted lithic artefacts to approach questions of technology, taphonomy, and the human use of space.
In the second section, Rocks, residues and use-wear, the contributors are concerned with the study of the original characteristics of rocks from different areas of the earth's surface, the selection of specific raw materials for manufacture into tools, the uses to which these tools were put, and how they were used.

 Terms Used to Describe Tephra
Dense rock fragments of a pyroclastic deposit (formed by tephra fall, pyroclastic flow or surge) are referred to as lithics.
Lithics may be subdivided into (1) cognate lithics, non-vesiculated magma fragments; (2) accessory lithics, rocks from along the magma conduit that have been explosively ejected during eruption; and (3) accidental lithics, rocks that have been eroded and picked up locally by pyroclastic flows and surges.
Spherical lapilli-sized particles that form as moist aggregates of ash in eruption clouds, usually by rain that falls through dry eruption clouds.

For this lab your students will need a selection of lithic edges, and conceivably they will be able to find enough flakes of similar size, shape, material and edge among the debitage from the earlier flint-knapping laboratory.
As with other laboratories involving lithics, you should be prepared for the possibility of cut fingers, and do not allow students to retouch any of the lithics unless they are wearing eye and hand protection.

Lots of archaeologists have never had a class in lithic analysis, just as, for example, let's say a lot of archaeologists have not had a class in petrology, industrial archaeology or plantation archaeology.
It can be argued that examining a variety of variables in a lithic study will provide more interpretive information than a mere statement that "a number of lithic artifacts were recovered." Again, it depends on the questions, but a replicable analysis method is advocated here.
It is essential that all lithic material types and combinations of artifacts and debitage be analyzed.
