Known as lithophones, the ancient instruments are typically made of 11 slabs of stone.
The lithophones were found in the southern province of Binh Duong in early January at a site that stretches some 20ha near a small hill in My Loc village in Tan My Commune of Tan Uyen District.

It is logical in the case of a lithophone consisting of seven slabs and five tones and for certain it is a lithophone, rather than, sonorous stones put together.
Most of the opinions are in favor that it is a lithophone because slabs of stone belong to the same vestige.

This can be up to five octaves in length but more generally, would only have two or three.
However, the modern lithophones have circular notes, which have excellent ringing properties.

This set of 30 tall, tuned glass tubes can be rubbed with moistened fingers to create atmospheric floaty sustains, or played with mallets to give a resonant and unusual xylophonic timbre.
Looking like a gigantic, alien marimba whose wooden keys have been replaced by massive stone slabs, the lithophone has great exotic appeal; its soft mallet samples provide a great timbre for rippling tuned-percussion patterns, while hard mallet hits add a musically pure pitch to the ancient ceremonial sound of resonant stones.
As one would expect from a VSL release, all four instruments in this 4.41GB library are multi-dynamic and perform different note lengths, trills, tremolos, glissandi, and effects, including some mad processing on certain lithophone samples.

A lithophone is a musical instrument consisting of a plurality of rocks or pieces of rock, in which musical notes are sounded by striking one or more of the rocks in combination.
The lithophone is similar to the glockenspiel, tubular glockenspiel, metallophone, xylophone, marimba, and to the glass percussion instruments created by Barry Prophet of The Music Gallery, not to be confused with the verrophone (a musical instrument that makes sound by rubbing, not by hitting, glass).
