The LSDP successfully organized the urban proletariat and channeled he energies of the rural landless peasantry toward its political goals during the Revolution of 1905, but it could not forever gloss over the contradictions inherent in a Marxist party attempting to win popular support by democratic means in a predominantly agricultural country.
The LSDP could either abandon its Marxist ideology and support the peasants in their bid for land, or forsake its democratic principles and opt for the Bolshevik formula, or it could resign itself to the status of a small, urban party in a predominantly agricultural country.
The Social Democrats, then in the forefront of the revolutionary movement, thought that the planned conference, which originally was to have been largely academic in content, would be a relatively minor event in the course of the revolution.

Democratic Party subscribe to what can be called a policy of calculated conformism, a traditional line of behavior during the Soviet occupation, when Lithuanian communists accepted the Soviet rule and, by “milking the Moscow cow,” sought the maximum wealth for the country (and for themselves).
But, given the new degree of freedom, the Lithuanians themselves are not walled in and, to the extent that many are able or need to travel west, to that extent their experience will temper their attitudes.

As in Russia proper, the political parties had little influence; the Czarist administration soon reestablished control and treated the Duma in St. Petersburg with suspicion; the Grand Assembly of Vilnius had assembled only once and Lithuania neither had a representative assembly, nor did it exist as an administrative unit.

Brazauskas's Social Democratic Coalition won the parliamentary elections last October but was outmaneuvered by LLU and NU(SL), which formed a ruling coalition meant to exemplify the "new politics" backed by President Adamkus.
As parliamentary speaker and NU(SL) leader, Paulauskas's initial reluctance to join forces with LSDP was partly explained by his fear of having a secondary role relative to the heavyweight Brazauskas.
Among those who abstained was deputy chairman of the LSDP Vytenis Andriukaitis, a leftist firebrand, who just days earlier had alleged that Williams International is corrupt from top to bottom and should be thrown out of Lithuania instantly.
