Litochoro is located 22 km S of Katerini, 90 km SSW of Thessaloniki, 58 km N of Larissa and 420 km WNW of Athens, on the; eastern slopes of Mount Olympus, of mythological fame as the home of the twelve gods of Olympus.
Litochoro has schools, banks, a post office, a harbour, a sports centre, a town hall, a hospital, a museum, a concert hall, shopping facilities and squares (plateies).
Litochoro acquired some fame during the 1999 NATO war in Yugoslavia when allied naval forces arrived on the beach of Gritsa; an action which provoked a reaction by the town's Communists.

En Olympo is a restaurant on the Litochoro central square, it seems to be the only reasonable choice in the town, or at least in the center of the town.
You don't have to try the local Litochoro pita (pie), I could not see what the difference was from other pitas and it was not very good either (too much filo pastry).
Litochoro is the main town in the Mt Olympus area, and the base for trekking.

I then drove through Litochoro, and up a winding road to the trailhead for the climb, 3,600' Prionia, site of a rustic cafe, a public restroom and a large parking lot.

In the years of the Turks` domination, Litochoro was base used for the attacks of the rebels of Olympus.
The famous chieftain Nichotsaras was killed here in 1807 while in 1878 the revolution started here, with leader the bishop Kitrous Nicholas, which failed and led to the destruction of Litochoro.
Despite this, Litochoro continued to be one of the most important centers of the area while at the beginning of the 19th century it had 3,000 inhabitants, Greek school and educational group.

We got off at Litochoro, one of the places the man in the Tourist Information Centre in Thessaloniki had promised would have a beach.
The station was in the middle of nowhere, but a 10 minute walk brought us to Camping Sylvia, run by a friendly but rather confusing man. He reminded me rather of one of the characters in The Vicar of Dibley.
Attempts to phone the Youth Hostel in Athens were less successful - I resorted to phoning my sister back home and getting her to look up the new number for me on the Internet.

The trailhead (367 meters) was west of the town by a cafe and is the start of the hike along the Enipeus Canyon to Prionia.

After 1 hour I was back at Scala and we descended to Prionia from where we took a cab back to Litochoro.
It's a shame that most people take a taxi from Litochoro to Prionia, because that route is especially beautiful.
