Little, Big tells the epic story of Smoky Barnable -- an anonymous young man who meets and falls in love with Daily Alice Drinkwater, and goes to live with her in Edgewood, a place not found on any map.
The Drinkwater family in the big house at Edgewater is very accepting of the strange things that have happened over the years.
The result is a book in which the reader is obliged, perhaps more than is usual in the genre, to pull things together, and as with the fold-out bookplate examined by several of the characters in the course of the book, Little Big apparently can't be interpreted by any two the same way.

Another reviewer compared this film to "Forrest Gump" in its scope, which is not too far off the mark, but this story cuts a little more deeply in its cry of outrage at the atrocities visited upon Native Americans as our great ancestors paved their way westward across our infant nation.
"Little Big Man" was an enormously significant Western in that it completely debunked the history of the West as it had been propounded in countless films throughout the genre's history.
The traditional Western depicted the arrival of the white man as an extension of civilization's blessings on the continent's less enlightened Native peoples; the settlers and the soldiers were harbingers of that civilization.
