The Story of Little Black Sambo is a children's book by Helen Bannerman, a Scot living in India, first published in 1899.
Little Black Sambo (the Japanese title is "Chibikuro Sambo") was first published in Japan by Iwanami Shoten Publishing in 1953.
Sambo was illustrated as an African Black boy rather than an Indian boy.

Sambo has been used as a pejorative to describe fl men for many decades and the use probably is taken from the book.
It is during this period that the leading universities engage in measuring the skulls of fls and whites and Indians and on the basis of skull size and capacity determine the place of each on the evolutionary chain.
However, I would be hesitant to assert, as someone did, that his daughter was exposed to LBS and there is not the "slightest tinge of racism in her little body." Racism is not a quality of existence; it is attitudes and it is acts.

I think Little Black Sambo is an okay book for children if you disregard the derogatory names of the kid and his parents, and tell your kid not to call anyone by them.
Sambo communicates with animals, which seemed to imply that he is inferior, and close to the animal world.
Sambo's parents are called Black Jumbo and Black Mumbo, and these names are rather apt to harbor racial and religious intolerance (as in the phrase "mumbo-jumbo").

Sambo was changed to Rama, the names of the adults were similarly changed, and the drawings were redone to eliminate the insulting "flface"caricatures.
When I heard the story of "Little Black Sambo" growing up in Zaire, I loved the story, the descriptions of the clothes, and since I had never heard of "Sambo" as a derogatory epithet, that didn't bother me. I wonder, though if children of color have the same kind of blithe ignorance.

This was one of my all time favorite stories as a child and I don’t recall ever giving one thought to Sambo being anything except a little boy who liked pancakes that had an exciting day in the jungle and saw tigers melt away into butter.
The original story of Little Black Sambo has never gone out of print since it was first published in 1899.
Maybe we should send PETA a copy of Little Black Sambo and they’d see tigers are safer in that zoo- at least they don’t run the risk of turning into butter…
