Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes --- Ink Blot Magazine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Born Myra Ellen Amos in Newton, North Carolina, the girl who would be Tori was given her name by a friend's boyfriend, who thought she just looked more like a "Tori." Growing up in a strict Christian household, she found release by playing on the piano at her Cherokee grandparents' house.
Were Little Earthquakes merely an album that featured Tori Amos' unique vocal style, we wouldn't be talking about this album nearly ten years removed from its original release.
It was the design for most female songwriters of the 1990's to follow, and they all owe substantial tribute to her for it.

Tori Amos : Little Earthquakes - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
With her haunting solo debut Little Earthquakes, Tori Amos carved the template for the female singer/songwriter movement of the '90s.
Little Earthquakes isn't always so stomach-churning, but it never seems less than deeply cathartic; it's the sound of a young woman (like the protagonist of "Silent All These Years") finally learning to use her own voice -- sort of the musical equivalent of Mary Pipher's -Reviving Ophelia.
Little Earthquakes is the most accessible work in Amos' catalog, and it's also the most influential and rewarding.

Although an earthquake is one of nature's ways of restoring balance when it is off, it's interesting that creates the diametrically opposite effect in most of us.
An earthquake is one of those natural 'disasters' in which we cede all rights and privileges and simply throw ourselves to the whims and fancies of a capricious god.
In an earthquake, we are completely taken off guard, vulnerable, unable to make our situation better.

Although Little Earthquakes is Tori Amos' first CD, it is also her best.
As much talent and innovation as she has shown in the years since this album was released, she has yet to re-achieve the well-nigh perfection of her initial offering.
Its message is one of freedom; too often people restrict themselves out of the fear of being laughed at or judged unfavorably; and Tori preaches that you don't have to wallow in your self-guilt and suffering in order to achieve happiness.
