Born Eva Narcissus Boyd in Belhaven, North Carolina, she moved to Brighton Beach, New York at a young age.
Amused by Eva's individual dancing style they wrote "The Loco-Motion" for her and had her record it as a demo (the record was intended for Dee Dee Sharp).

To publicise the song, Little Eva appeared on American Bandstand - for which she devised a dance routine to accompany The Locomotion - and the record was soon Number One in the American charts.
