  The Devoted Friend
The little ducks were swimming about in the pond, looking just like a lot of yellow canaries, and their mother, who was pure white with real red legs, was trying to teach them how to stand on their heads in the water.
Indeed, so devoted was the rich Miller to little Hans, that be would never go by his garden without leaning over the wall and plucking a large nosegay, or a handful of sweet herbs, or filling his pockets with plums and cherries if it was the fruit season.
Little Hans was very much distressed at times, as he was afraid his flowers would think he had forgotten them, but he consoled himself by the reflection that the Miller was his best friend.

"Little Hans" was a young boy who was the subject of an early but extensive study of castration anxiety and the Oedipus complex by Freud.
Freud wrote a summary of his treatment of Little Hans, in 1909, in a paper entitled "Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-year-old Boy." This was one of just a few case studies that Freud published.

Hans Christian Andersen: The Little Mermaid
The little mermaid now perceived that the crew were in danger; even she herself was obliged to be careful to avoid the beams and planks of the wreck which lay scattered on the water.
The little mermaid swam out farther from the shore and placed herself between some high rocks that rose out of the water; then she covered her head and neck with the foam of the sea so that her little face might not be seen, and watched to see what would become of the poor prince.
The little mermaid, dressed in silk and gold, held up the bride’s train; but her ears heard nothing of the festive music, and her eyes saw not the holy ceremony; she thought of the night of death which was coming to her, and of all she had lost in the world.

Hans, however, gave no more heed to this than to shout up to them, to keep the hens away from the well, for they were scraping gravel down on the top of him.
Hans filled his bundle with gold and silver coins, put it on his neck, and tramped back to his master, who was scared beyond all measure at seeing him again.

Little Hans' s father took it upon himself to communicate such information about his son's sexual interests as he could; there seems little doubt that he expected that this would provide a model of an undisturbed, successful childhood, for he regarded himself and his wife as good parents, sexually enlightened and analytically aware.
It is her castratrion threat which has been reported, whithout corroboration, as heard; with her we are always in the realm of hearsay; with hearsay, I suspect, we are always in the realm of the mother.
Hans, of course, knows that he cannot be heard; during one of his lengthy conversations with his father (recorded, presumably, by the father himself, notebook in hand), Hans says "You don't believe me again?" and at another moment "I'm not joking, you know, Daddy".

Appendx 3 : Three Boys and Their Growing-Up Performances : Benton Komins
In the "Little Hans" case study ("Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-Year-Old Boy"), Freud outlines a model of "corrective" psychoanalytic technology that attempts to replace a boy's corrupt knowledge with consolidating knowledge.
At the end of the analytic process, Freud and Little Hans's father give the precocious boy the keys to understanding the meaning of his corrupting knowledge; collectively the three characters redirect Hans's libidinal energy in an appropriate way toward an obtainable object.
Little Hans provides the "less roundabout proof" that fully corroborates Freud's earlier theoretical model of sexuality.
