The founder of the Houghton Little Brothers, Mike Aten, began as a volunteer for Little Brothers in Chicago in 1971, and in 1979 he joined the staff of the Minneapolis Little Brothers.
For a number of reasons--- including the severe winters, poverty, and the high percentage of elderly people in the population--Mike concluded that Little Brothers was badly needed in Houghton County.

At this point I knew very little about Houghton besides the fact that it was in New York and that they had a strong soccer program.
Houghton seemed to be the perfect fit for me. However, I didn't get the feeling that God really wanted me to come here until I played in the indoor soccer tournament here as a recruit in February of my senior year.
After playing in the tournament I absolutely knew that Houghton was where I wanted to go and was where God wanted me. There was no question about it for me. So, I guess the thing that most influenced me to attend here was the wonderful experience I had playing in the indoor tournament here.
