The Little House series (also known as "Laura Years") is based on decades-old memories of Laura Ingalls Wilder's childhood in the Midwest region of the United States during the late 19th century.
Her birthplace is seven miles northeast of the village, and is marked by a replica cabin at the Little House wayside (near Lund, Wisconsin).
The series starred Richard Thomas as Charles Ingalls; Lindsay Crouse as Caroline Ingalls; Meredith Monroe as Laura Ingalls; Barbara Jane Reams as Mary Ingalls; Haley McCormick as Carrie Ingalls; Walton Goggins as Almanzo Wilder; and Skye McCole Bartusiak as Rose Wilder.

"Little House" was one of those series which taught moral, religious lessons without preaching; stories that could happen in real life, usually leading up to the show's moral.

Little House, by its title, seemed to be girly but it was actually kind of deep and frightening; and sad, sometimes.

I used to watch the TV series on and off during the late 1970s before I was introduced to Laura Ingalls Wilder's true-to-life adventures out on the frontier.
Unfortunately, the Pa character on the TV just doesn't bear any resemblance at all to the real-life father of the famous little girl under her sunbonnet.
The two little girls, Laura and her sister, the blonde Mary both experienced very daunting incidents ranging from their own father falling into a raging river to Ma's leg getting pinned under a heavy log from the new home they were building to the sudden loss of their faithful dog, Jack.

I did not see the series when it was originally shown, and bought the DVDs for my daughter (aged 7) for Christmas as she loves the books.
So often these TV adaptations can be a disappointment, but this lovely series remains true to the spirit of the books while expanding the characters and introducing new themes and storylines.
I always loved Little House on the Prairie when I was younger as did my mother and sister, so was delighted to introduce my daughters aged 10 and 12 to the first series.

I received my Little House box set MANY, MANY years ago for Christmas, and it sat on my shelf, a treasure waiting to be fully discovered, for the better part of 2 decades.
I never much liked the series on TV however, they made up a lot of situations that were not believeable, and in general just didn't follow the books much.
