At home, we are currently reading On the Banks of Plum Creek, from the Little House on the Prairie series.
I never read the series as a kid, being under some mis-impression that it was "girl stuff", whatever that was.
The amount of domain knowledge required to be a successful homesteader was enormous: how to trap animals, how to build a house from logs, how to build a house from sod, how to make soap, how to raise various crops, how to care for horses and cows, how to make shoes, etc. But I digress.

As we live in the heartland we will be planning trips to her homes and museums as well (though many will have to wait until the spring) such as this one we took this past summer to Little House in Big Woods.
Prairie Primer - this is a substantial purchase - 40.00 but it seems to be well reviewed and well cited, personally we have not used it.
Little House books are HUGE here so we will definitely be incorporating some of the activities, etc. Also hoping to get to some of the historical sites this summer.

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957) wrote a series of books in the 1930's describing her childhood as a prairie homesteader but it wasn't until her books became the basis of the TV series Little House on the Prairie that she came to be widely known and a historic figure in her own right.
Technically, De Smet, South Dakota should be the locale for the television series, since Ingalls lived there during the time covered by the series.
