My girlfriend and I stayed at HI Vancouver Downtown earlier this year and it was par for the course as far as North American HI hostels: cheap, clean, amenities aren't great but the resources are geared for a young, single on-the-budget traveller, so that more than makes up for it.
If she's a film buff, she may be able to catch something worthwhile at the tail end of the vancouver international film festival.
