A south dipping belt of VIII and IX lies south of the river from Catawissa eastward, and those formations spread over Roaring creek, Locust, and Franklin townships, brought to the surface by the broad and rumpled Selinsgrove anticlinal, which, in Schuylkill county, separates the Mahanoy coal field from that of the Beaver Meadows.
Conyngham township is a square piece of Western Middle Anthracite coal field, included in Columbian county, with its Hartville and Centralia collieries.
A little lead and zinc ore has been found in the limestone of VI, near the west line of Center township, but the attempt to mine it was abandoned.

A Schuylkill County business has been identified as the source of a recent gasoline leak in West Mahanoy Township and Frackville Borough that contaminated area groundwater and a tributary of Little Mahanoy Creek, as well as causing a build up of gasoline vapors in an apartment building and clinic affiliated with Good Samaritan Hospital.
An emergency contract with an environmental consultant was finalized July 24 to maintain the containment on the creek, construct an inversion dam to capture the gasoline before it entered the creek and conduct air monitoring in the area.
In addition, DEP recommended that the county EMA contact the Ashland Water Co. because its surface water supplies are in the Little Mahanoy watershed.

Little Daisy is currently on-loan from the Citizens Fire Company #2 of Mahanoy City.
The water wagon was acquired by the Ryan Township Fire Company #1 of Barnesville, PA. The wooden tank holds approximately 800 gallons of water and is pulled by a full team of horses.
Its last appearance in Mahanoy City was the 1972 Schuylkill County Firefighters Convention Parade hosted by the Mahanoy City Fire Department.

Harrisburg (December 13, 2005) Amid rising concern about childhood obesity and too little academic achievement, many Pennsylvania school districts are still ignoring one of the most obvious tools to reach their goals – implementation of the federally financed School Breakfast Program.
Currently the number of Pennsylvania’s low-income children receiving school breakfast is only 36 percent of the number receiving school lunch.
Were Pennsylvania to raise this ratio to 55 percent, which is the level achieved by leading states such as West Virginia and Kentucky, an additional $19.7 million in federal funds would be available to cover costs.

Small coal beds have been opened near Duncannon, and near Mt. Patrick, in the Pocono sandstone rocks (X) of Berry’s and Buffalo Mountains, but they are of course worthless.
The enormous length of the zig-zag outcrop of the Lower Helderberg limestone, No. VI, amounting in all to 150 miles and more, has filled the county with quarries; and a large trade in lime to other counties is carried on in Liverpool Township.
Four remarkable trap dykes cross the Cove in Rye and Penn townships; the largest, Ironstone Ridge, is the north end in Perry county of the remarkable dyke which crosses Cumberland county.

Pennsylvania is already one of only 3 states where the general population is advised to restrict their consumption of all types of fish from any body of water in the state due to mercury contamination.
Dangerous chemicals to be used as inputs for the refinery include about 11,400 gallons/year of methanol for the sulfur separation process, about 5,000 gallons/year of sulfuric acid used for processing and wastewater treatment, and about 3,200 gallons/year of ammonia to be used in the pollution control system of the on-site gas-burning power plant.
