In the years that followed, many ships ran across the little islands and atolls of the Gilberts in the course of their travels in the central Pacific.
The Phoenix Islands Settlement Scheme sought to provide an outlet through the development of three uninhabited atolls in the Phoenix Islands and was the last attempt at human colonization within the British Empire.
On 20 November 1943, the U.S. 2nd Marine Division invaded, in the battles of Makin and bloody Tarawa.

Butaritari was called Makin Atoll by the U.S. military, and Makin was then known as Makin Meang or Little Makin to distinguish it.
Butaritari atoll has a land area of 13.6 km² and a population of 4200 as of 2002, while Makin has a land area of 6.7 km² and a population of 1700.
In November 1943, elements of the U.S. 27th Infantry Division took the island, in the Battle of Makin.

Anyone know why when I tell my Sims to make woo-hoo, sometimes we cut to a pre-made little movie with tacky music and sometimes we just stay on the real Sims themselves "doin' the 'hoo"?
I think the cut scenes are for first times.Like the first time ever or in a hot tub or with that sim.
I also thought it might be their first woohoo but I have seen it about 8 times with one of my Sims now.

Kevin Menzies, son of Michael Menzies, Pvt., NZEF, stated in letter of 9 June 2000, "My father was captured [as a Soldier/Coast Watcher in the Gilbert Islands] on the islet of Bikati, the northern tip of the Makin Atoll, on 10 Dec 1941 and [later] began his incarceration in the University of Life at Zentsuji.
He and his comrades, including his brother Jack M. Menzies, were among the first Allied prisoners in Japan, arriving in Yokohama on 7 Jan 1942.
