		Spider-Man is a film which doesn't loose itself in special effects, using them sparingly to develop the character's new found powers, as he swings from building to building and battles his arch enemy the Green Goblin.
		Spider-Man is a breath of fresh air to an almost forgotten film franchise.
		Much like the success of X-Men, film studios seem to be doing Marvel Comics some justice, nailing the formula of comicbook adaptations by grabbing hold of a reputable director with a passion for the original source material.

		The experiment goes haywire and he becomes The Green Goblin, archenemy of Spider Man. He too has extraordinary powers, and while some of their battles are noteworthy, the second half of the story lacks the strong drama created early in the film.
		The highlight of the film is Spider Man's coming out party when he wants to raise $3,000 by staying in the ring with wrestler Bone Saw (Randy Savage) for three minutes so he can buy a car to impress MJ.
		The only thing missing at this point in the film is a villain; provided in true villainous form by Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn.

		Marvel's Spider-Man series was one of the first comics to incorporate characters of color into its fantasy world, both as central and peripheral characters, so it is a bit of a let down (at least for me) that race is so underrepresented in the film.
		Not only was the image a key element in the film's final movement, it had also already been released to theaters in a teaser trailer and was featured in the mass print marketing that was set to commence.
		The only real disappointments are the film's treatment of gender and race, but as a nearly incessant whiteness and not so progressive gender politics have plagued the comics industry for much of its history, perhaps it's no surprise they get replayed here.

		The film is basically a three part story at this point: Peter learning how to use his new found abilities and powers, his quest for romance with Mary Jane, and his battle and confrontations with his rival The Green Goblin.
		It is right up there with the "Superman" film starring Christopher Reeve and Tim Burton's "Batman", and combines the fun and exciting action of the former as well as the dark and mysterious nature of the latter.
