The 1980 remake of LITTLE MISS MARKER does visibly capture a lot of the 1930s feeling of the original Damon Runyon story, but the film as a whole seems under-done.
The original version of LITTLE MISS MARKER was filmed by Paramount Pictures in 1934, starring Shirley Temple as "The Kid" and Adolphe Menjou as "Sorrowful".

Though there may be a tendency to compare the 1980 version of "Little Miss Marker" to the 1934 version (with Shirley Temple as The Kid), writer/director Walter Bernstein captures the very essence of the 1930's with his screenplay and direction, respectively.
Little Miss Marker is one of my favorite films (added to the already long list) because it looks great cinemagraphic-wise, the script is well done, and the performances are very, very good.

Perhaps the most memorable of all of the movies based on Damon Runyon's story because of the winning presence of Shirley Temple (although it was remade three times), this is the story of a little girl who is left as a marker for a $20.00 bet.
Needless to say, she wins over the hearts of all and sundry and the bookie turns over a new leaf to make this little girl happy.
Through all the complications the bookie runs in to, including eventually marrying his long-time girlfriend to provide a home for the child, there is a tenor of love and joy that was not matched in any of the remakes.

Screenwriter Walter Bernstein made his directorial debut with Little Miss Marker, a re-make of the Damon Runyon story that has been filmed many times before (most notably as Little Miss Marker with Shirley Temple, Sorrowful Jones starring Bob Hope, and the Tony Curtis vehicle 40 Pounds of Trouble).
The story concerns the relationship between the two when Little Miss Marker is left with Sorrowful as a down payment for one of her father's bets.
The original Runyon story tells of a hard-hearted bookie who reluctantly accepts a little girl as security for a wager, and gradually thaws out as he cares for the child as his own.

I believe this is the 3rd remake of "little Miss Marker", the first with Adolf Menjou and Shirley Temple and the 2nd made in the early 60's with Tony Curtis (taking the little girl to Disneyland.
Based on a story by Damon Runyon (the same author whose stories formed the basis for the classic Guys and Dolls), the film is populated by the usual Runyonesque cast of endearing, gold-hearted Depression-era lowlife characters.
Matthau plays Sorrowful Jones, a bookie who takes the Kid (Sara Stimson) as a marker for a bet placed by her father, who promptly goes out and drowns himself.

This was the first of several versions of Damon Runyon's charming and durable story, but none of the others (SORROWFUL JONES, 1949; 40 POUNDS OF TROUBLE, 1963; LITTLE MISS MARKER, 1980) compared with the original, because none of them had the amazing Shirley Temple.
Temple plays an adorable little tyke whose father leaves her as a marker for a $20 bet with bookie Sorrowful Jones (Adolphe Menjou), then kills himself.
Jones has no idea of what to do with her, but gradually he and "Marky" grow closer as Jones finds religion, marries longtime amour nightclub singer Bangles Carson (Dorothy Dell), and becomes generous--much to the surprise of his cronies, whom the little girl thinks of as Knights of the Round Table.
