The Little Pee Dee River is a tributary of the Pee Dee River (which originates in the Appalachian Mountains where it is known as the Yadkin River).
The Little Pee Dee is a sluggish meandering flwater river that ranges between ten and about twenty-five feet (3-8 m) wide and 6 to 10 feet (2-3 m) deep in its upper reaches.
The Little Pee Dee runs its entire length through coastal lands of low relief that are pockmarked with Carolina bays.

Fourteen miles of the Little Pee Dee River from Highway 378 to the confluence with the Great Pee Dee River were designated as a State Scenic River in March of 1990 by the Legislature.
The proposed Scenic River addition includes the 64-mile river corridor that begins at the North Carolina border on the Lumber River and extends south to the U.S. Highway 378 bridge on the Little Pee Dee River.
This river segment encompasses 17 miles of the Lumber and 47 miles of the Little Pee Dee.

The Lumber River is one of the newest components of the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers system (80+ miles designated in 1998), and a portion of the Little Pee Dee was designated by South Carolina as a Scenic River.
Much of the lower Lumber and Little Pee Dee wind their way through magnificent swamps, and there are innumerable sloughs, old river channels, and lakes that can sometimes confuse paddlers as to which is the correct route.

The Pee Dee region of South Carolina is roughly the ‘northeastern portion’ of the state, through which the Little Pee Dee and the Great Pee Dee Rivers run.
Some historians hold that the lands near the rivers were hunting grounds of a small tribe called Pedees or Pee Dees, which has possibly almost insignificant (probably through amalgamation with larger and more powerful tribes nearby, such as Cheraws and Catawbas) at the time of white settlement.
It was on this side of the river that General Francis Marion (The Swamp Fox) would take refuge after swooping down upon and terrorizing the British forces on the other side.

Just east of Charlotte, NC, at the confluence with the Rocky River (or the Uwharrie River, this is the subject of some debate), it takes on the name Pee Dee River, and is once again dammed at Blewett Falls Lake.
In this lower section, the river is virtually at sea level, and the current will be controlled by tides which can affect the level of the river by five feet or so, making camping and paddling more difficult.
The lower Pee Dee alternately splits and converges with other rivers, so you must be sure you know where your final destination is and take the proper channel.
