Little Russia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Little Russia, originally Little or Lesser Rus' (Russian: Malorossiya; Ukrainian: Mala Rus’), was the name for the territory of Ukraine applied in the time of the Russian Empire and earlier.
While the term Little Russia was the Russian name for the geographic territory since the middle of the seventeenth century, the modern name Ukraine (Ukrayina) has been used in different ways since the sixteenth century.
The terms Little Russian (malorusskiy yazyk or malorosskiy yazyk) for Ukrainian language, which implies it being simply a dialect of Russian, and Little Russians (malorossy) for the Ukrainians, have fallen out of use as well.

Nowadays Russian opera stars are quickly becoming well known among music lovers throughout the world.
They are also heard in a steady stream of recordings of Russian liturgical music making its way to the West: something new under the sun, since the faith was driven underground in the Soviet Union in the 1920's, at the dawn of the recording era.

ANALYSIS: Ukraine's "Little Russian" foreign policy proclaims "To Europe with Russia!" (06/23/02)
Kuchma's "Little Russian" foreign policy, as evidenced by the March decree to commemorate in two years' time the anniversary of the 1654 Treaty of Pereislav that placed Ukraine under Russian rule.
Kuchma's "Little Russianism" is more pro-statehood than its counterpart in Belarus; nevertheless, Ukraine's leaders cannot envisage Ukraine outside the Russian sphere of influence, and Moscow will always remain far more important to them than Brussels and Washington.
"Little Russianism," like "multi-vectorism," is a reflection of an amorphous and confused national identity, and hence of an inability to choose between East and West.

 Symphony No2. Little Russian Symphony
With the advent of the Little Russian Symphony, the kuchka and their supporters thought they had won an ally in Tchaikovsky.
Tchaikovsky uses it as the anchor of a simple but charming rondo, whose second episode, a clarinet tune with flute accompaniment, is another Little Russian song, "Spin, o my spinner." The movement ends with a "disintegrating" coda of the kind invented by Beethoven for the funeral march of the Eroica.
A little later, after a make-believe catastrophe, this is developed in a more staccato style, and at that point one understands very clearly one of the reasons Stravinsky was so fond of this piece.

The fact that the Little Russian symphony was a bold, fiery, and utterly moving piece of music was an unexpected bonus.
"Little Russia" was tsarist Russia's way of referring to the Ukraine, and it is this term that gives the symphony its name.
