THEATER REVIEW: Little Shop of Horrors -- Quite appetizing
Little Shop of Horrors is yet another show in the recent succession of highly enjoyable MIT Musical Theatre Guild productions: it’s appealing, competent, and entertaining.
Little Shop is written by the team of lyricist/librettist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken, who later worked on a good deal of Disney animated films (like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin).
The admittedly nifty-looking set piece of little shop’s exterior is quite superfluous as well: the only thing it adds is several long (and loud) pauses while it’s dragged on and off the stage.

From the animated opening menu, that slips onto the screen one vine-covered option at a time, it’s easy to pick up on the exuberant spirit of ‘Little Shop of Horrors.’ The 1986 musical began life in drastically different form, as a 1960 ultra-low-budget horror comedy, directed in two days by Roger Corman.
Although the story of a fast-growing, man-eating plant from outer space in a Skid Row flower shop may sound like an unlikely focal point for singing and dancing, Menken, Ashman (who also adapted the screenplay) and director Frank Oz quickly demonstrate that it’s actually an irresistible premise.
‘Little Shop of Horrors’ is a treat: sprightly, naughty in unexpected ways and still refreshingly unlike other musicals.

Nationwide, pet shop employees and ex-employees report witnessing or being told to murder dogs, cats, birds and other animals by bludgeoning them, putting them in freezers, drowning them in toilets, or leaving them in back rooms or closets to die of neglect- all so the store can avoid vet bills, cut food and housing costs.
An alarming number of pet shops are in the lucrative “pocket pet” business, selling small exotic/wild animals, such as hedgehogs, prairie dogs, and iguanas to satisfy consumer demand.
Every year, countless people succumb to the temptation to purchase "exotic" animals like hedgehogs, macaws, lizards, monkeys--even tigers and bears--from pet shops or auctions to keep as "pets." Based on the Roger Corman cult classic, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS slams together twisted humor, a singing plant, a sadistic dentist, and sweet and oblivious love between two skid-row denizens into a rollicking musical well worth watching again and again.
It takes a little genius to turn a Z-grade Corman horror flick into a hit musical comedy… and a little more to sucessfully return it to the big screen.
