The median income for a household in the township was $41,228, and the median income for a family was $47,788.

In 1885, the State of Michigan chose Traverse City as the site for the Northern Michigan Asylum, a hospital dedicated to the idea that fresh air and beautiful surroundings could ease the suffering of the mentally ill. The hospital closed in 1989, but its extensive forested grounds and stately castle-like buildings have been preserved.
On the west arm of Grand Traverse Bay, 15 miles north of Traverse City on M 22 in the Village of Suttons Bay, the Suttons Bay Municipal Beach is a fun spot at a beautiful location.

The Emmet County Board of Supervisors promptly informed the state officials that they had already established the county seat at Little Traverse and in 1861 the Act was declared unconstitutional and repealed.
It was organized in 1853 and included the present nine townships in the southern half of the county.
It was not until 1897 that the boundaries of these townships finally stabilized and areas that belonged to Charlevoix County for awhile came back to Emmet County.

Michigan is the only state that supports lighthouse preservation with a program of annual grants from the state to local preservation groups.
The 2-1/2 story wood, hipped-roof keeper's house (1872), located at 91 Michigan Avenue onshore, was transferred to the city for preservation in 2000.
