Little Walter, born Walter Marion Jacobs on May 1, 1930 in Marksville, Louisiana, taught himself harmonica age at the age of 8.
Walter's innovative playing and distinctive sound from his amplified harmonica contributed heavily to making Muddy's recordings of the early 1950's the magnificent achievements they still are.
Walter died on February 15, 1968 in Chicago at the age of 37 as a result of head injuries sustained in a street fight.

In contrast to his abundant musical artistry, Little Walter was one tough character whose facial scars and missing teeth betrayed his no-nonsense attitude toward those who got in his way or challenged his authority.
Walter lives on in the music of any harmonica player who tries to bend a note and play the blues, many of whom worship the man for his brash approach to the instrument that so changed the sound of American music.

Little Walter could make his harp sound like a tenor sax, he was instrumental in defining the sound that is now known as Chicago blues harp.
It was as a menber of, and a vital contributor to the Muddy Waters band that Walter was given full rein to stretch his wings, and it is a tribute to Muddy's foresight and generosity of spirit that he early recognized Walter's great talent and allowed him every opportunity and encouragement to develop it.
Walter was backed by guitarists David and Louis Myers and drummer Fred Below (known as the Aces, this group had been working with Junior Wells), he made his first records for the CHESS subsiduary CHECKER records.

Among the mostly widely seen performance photos of Little Walter, which have been used in many books and magazines as well as on T-shirts and album covers over the last four decades, were shot by the late, great blues photographer Ray Flerlage at a single Little Walter performance at the University of Chicago in 1966.
Note 1., the barrel-shaped connector at the base of the mic in my photo, vs. the connector in the LW photo that appears to be wider at the top than the bottom, with sides that curve from being flush with bottom of the mic to the point where it is connected to 2.
Little Walter's genius wasn't in choosing the right equipment or having some secret mic/amplifier combination - his real genius was in the way he thought about and played his music, not his equipment.

Both men were titans of the harp during the same post-war interval in the blues chronology, but Little Walter's reputation was achieved very early on in his career (and his life was a lot shorter), while Big Walter Horton was a mainstay in the Chigago blues scene (and much earlier in Memphis) until 1981.
Walter Horton was born in 1917 or 1918 in Horn Lake Mississippi, a little south of Memphis.
Walter would have been just 10 years of age at the time, making it unlikely that he is the musician to whom the listing refers, but more about this later.
