		In 1866, the pressure being applied by the Michiganders was felt, and Congress appropriated $67,000 for the construction of a new channel between White Lake and Lake Michigan, and $10,000 for the construction of a lighthouse at the harbor entry.
		The square white pyramidal tower was of wooden construction, and stood 27 feet in height.
		William Robinson became the first keeper of the beacon light in 1872, and that same year the Lighthouse Board requested that the sum of $4,000 be appropriated for the construction of a keeper's dwelling on the shore near the pierhead light.

		With the South Plains region receiving more than 9.25 inches of rain since the first of the year, both flora and fauna are thriving throughout the area, and the zigzagging drive east along FM 40 to White River is an excellent way to see just what a little rain can do for our region.
		However, not having been to White River in more than 1« years, I didn't really know what to expect of the lake.

		The Little White is fed by an enormous aquifer that stores rain all winter and then slowly releases it late into the summer, making this a world class playground for class V paddlers when almost everything else is bone dry.
		The Little White has some nice scenery and the stunning aquamarine water has to be seen to be believed.

		The land, in western Klickitat County in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, will be managed as the Little White Salmon Biodiversity Reserve.
		As a condition of the grant, Pacific Power, a Portland-based utility, agreed to exchange 120 adjacent acres east of the Little White Salmon for property of equal value, preferably in the Lewis River basin.
		Pacific Power owns Condit Dam on the White Salmon River to the east and has agreed to remove the dam rather than pay the cost of reconstructing it to allow fish passage.
