True, the screenplay did invoke a little modern feminism, but there was a feminist movement during the 1860's; it was called the suffragette movement.

The different roles the little women play are specifically drawn from Alcott's keen observations of what made women, both individually and collectively, successful, and each little woman is also a careful exploration of an element of Alcott's dreams and family relationships.
If a group of Little Women fans were to gather and discuss their favorite character, most would probably choose Jo-- she is the most vibrant character in the novel and her struggles with self-identity and expectations is one most teenage girls can identify with.
She shows us that all roles for women, from angel to monster, are possibly masks which may be beneficial for the women trapped in apparently limiting roles if those roles are used to the best advantage.

MMI Review: Little Women (1994)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The title alone suggests demureness and docility, two characteristics which were absolutely antithetical to its author, Louisa May Alcott, a strong woman of the nineteenth century who was determined to make her living, not as a servant or as a seamstress, but as a writer.
It has been reported that the author found "Little Women" a bore to write and that the values in the book belong to her educator father and not to herself, but she did achieve her dream of making her living as a writer.
In the latest version of "Little Women", dedicated to the memory of Polly Klaas, Winona Ryder makes a delightful Jo March for 90's audiences & she is well supported by Gabriel Byrne in one of his best performances as Professor Bhaer.

"Little Women" is ensemble in nature, but Jo is unquestionably the central character.
Spirited, talented and at odds with an unfair world in which men are encouraged to be passionate and creative and women are placed in domestic pigeon holes, Jo receives the quiet nudging from her mother that she needs to help her find the courage to follow her heart.
"Little Women," with its themes of deep family (sisterly) love and faith intact, should easily please fans of the book - but any audience will be more than satisfied with this cinematic gem.

There is absolutely no foul language used in this movie and its very refreshing to see both a healthy, loving family relationship like the March family, as well as moral relationships between the men and the women in the film.
This delightful movie is one for the whole family although adolescent boys might have a harder time finding a character to identify with.
This movie is the antithesis of the shallow, ego-centric gratuitous violence and morally skimpy scripts of todays cinematic experience.

Little Women (1933) - Movie Review
Sure, Winona Ryder was 23 when she starred as the "little" Jo March, but Katherine Hepburn was 26, and Kate has always looked old for her age.
While Little Women has always been a story about young ladies pulling themselves up without a father in their lives, this adaptation minimizes their liberation considerably.
The third of nine adaptations of the film to date, the 1933 Little Women is nonetheless one of the better versions of the book, and it can be forgiven a lot due to its age and era.

How the "little women" hold up as they undergo their trials and tribulations is also essential, as they survive and thrive without (and occasionally despite) men, who appear only in supporting roles, a tidy inversion of Hollywood tradition.
Little Women's star-making performance was that of Katherine Hepburn, whose tomboyish spunk is wonderfully endearing in the role of Jo, the embryonic writer.
Katherine Hepburn brings the Little Women heroine Jo March alive in a portrayal that truly does justice to the Jo that Louisa May Alcott wrote.

While films like Reality Bites (1994) focus more on the trials of life after college, Threesome ventures into the lives of three students who meet during their third year of school.
Threesome does not idealize friendship as if it was something permanent and stable, but offers a candid look at relations in which people can find mutuality and intimacy in short periods and that unforeseen circumstances which bring people together can be enough to provoke exploration.
This movies being set in college is too funny because that is in fact where people explore as eddie refers to it in the first 20 seconds of the movie "deviancy".

AlcottWeb: Reference Shelf: News: Hartford Courant
Madeleine Stern, who has devoted many of her 83 years to the study of Louisa May Alcott, is no great fan of the recent film adaptation of "Little Women." The 1994 movie helped make Alcott one of the hottest literary properties around -- a century after her death.
Perhaps the most significant moment of research came in 1942, when the two women were in Harvard's Houghton Library, trying to confirm their suspicion that Alcott had led "a double literary life" by writing racy "sensation stories" either anonymously or under a pseudonym.
But it wasn't until 1974 that Stern had the "brainstorm" to bring together and publish the adult fiction that revealed a darker side of the author of "Little Women." The result was 1975's "Behind a Mask: The Unknown Thrillers of Louisa May Alcott." It created a sensation.
