BBC - History - Gerhard Bersu (1889 - 1964)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Using ethnographic parallels to help in his interpretation, Bersu was able to identify the remains of an Iron Age roundhouse, and other structures such as granaries and storage pits.
Both the approach and outcome were revolutionary - previously very little was known about prehistoric settlement, and prior to Bersu's excavation no one had thought of roundhouses as the normal form of prehistoric domestic architecture in Britain.
During his internment Bersu explored a host of sites, including three `great' Iron Age round-houses and three Viking burial sites, the most famous of which is perhaps the Viking boat burial at Balladoole - which to this day is important in illuminating the impact of early Viking settlers in the west of Britain.
