And the Mondays' ranks included the one and only Bez (Mark Berry), an utterly deranged friend of the band whose sole role was to supply the spastic fantastic dancing that remains the scene's most enduring image.
To call the Mondays one of the most significant and influential rock groups to emerge in England since the Smiths would not be an indulgence in hyperbole.
Live, the stopgap souvenir of the Pills'n Thrills tour, was recorded on the pitch at Leeds' United Football Ground — and sounds it.

While the Stone Roses were based in '60s pop, adding only a slight hint of dance music, Happy Mondays immersed themselves in the club and rave culture, eventually becoming the most recognizable band of that drug-fueled scene.
Happy Mondays were one of the first rock bands to integrate hip-hop techniques into their music.
For a band that celebrated their vulgarity and excessiveness, Happy Mondays appropriately were undone by their addictions, but they left behind a surprisingly influential legacy, apparent in everyone from dance bands like the Chemical Brothers to rock & rollers like Oasis.

 The Happy Mondays biography
The Happy Mondays were the artful dodgers of acid house.
The Mondays' music - a funk-fired melange of musical odds and ends and their enthusiastic participation in Manchester's thriving club culture - saw them being feted, along with The Stone Roses, as the leaders of the late-80s indie-dance scene.
Their third album, Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches, produced by Paul Oakenfold, became a UK No.1, and seemed to benefit from the polish and dance inflections that Oakenfold brought to the band's compositions.

Ryder formed the Happy Mondays in 1982 together with partner in crime and dancing vibe machine Bez (currently charming the country in C4’s Celebrity Big Brother!), drawing upon ‘60s psychedelia, ‘70s funk and ‘80s house music.

Formed in the mid-80s, the Happy Mondays were led by two troublemakers by the name of Shaun and Paul Ryder, who had been notorious for a lot of things including feeding pigeons with rat poison making those pigeons croak to death.
Cale, who was responsible for producing seminal debut albums for Nico, the Stooges, and Patti Smith, had a lot to bargain for when he realized not only could the Happy Mondays couldn’t play a note but the fact that they were very idiotic and were way into doing drugs.
In late 1989, the Happy Mondays performed the song on Top of the Pops while their Mancunian counterparts the Stone Roses played the infectious “Fool’s Gold” single that marked a new era in British music.

After listening to the album - particularly to "Wrote For Luck" and "Do It Better" - a rare thing occurred: I discovered that I preferred the live recordings of the songs to the album versions.
Now, live recordings are usually poorly recorded, rarely well mixed, and have loads of incessant crowd noise on them.
And yet, even when listening to the live tracks on videotape, in cramped monaural sound (well, it's not spacious, is it?), I still preferred them to the album.

The 5th studio album from the Glaswegian duo of Aidan Moffat and Malcom Middleton might be the most ambitious and bracing of their brief, action-packed career.
While not entirely departing from Arab Strap's tried & tested equation of relationship-autopsies set to a disco beat, 'Mondays...' is so brutally focused, both lyrically and musically, that this might as well be the band's first album (and we mean that in a good way).
When we call this album the most intense, soul-stirring work of the band’s career, we in no way wish to disparage their previous albums or the men and women whose lives are discussed on them.

 HAPPY MONDAYS - BIOGRAPHY
The Mondays' ramshackle performance doesn't win, but it brings them to the attention of Mike Pickering, then the Hacienda's resident DJ, later founder of M People.
Largely incoherent indie-rock, the album is notable only for the song 24 Hour Party People - although NME praises the first single, Tart Tart, for having "good rude lyrics" - and for landing Factory with a writ from Michael Jackson for illegally borrowing Beatles lyrics.
Recorded in L.A. with Oakenfold and Osbourne, Happy Mondays' triumphant third album is rivalled in the indie-dance era only by Stone Roses' debut.
