Bootleg recording - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bootleg recording (or simply bootleg or boot) is an audio and/or video recording of a performance that was not officially released by the artist, or under other legal authority.
Bootlegging is often incorrectly referred to as piracy but there are important differences between the two terms.
Bootlegging is trafficking in recordings that the record companies have not commercially released, whereas piracy is the illegal copying/sale of recordings that are (or have been) available commercially or are planned/scheduled for commercial release.

Jesusfreakhideout.com: Audio Adrenaline, "Live Bootleg" Review
Live Bootleg was recorded over several dates in early 1995, including a spot I attended in February in Lancaster, PA. The record captures their live energy pretty well with its raw production and intimate presentation.
One major drawback to the recording, however, is the underpar drumming work from then live fill-in Brian Hayes a few years before Ben Cissell joined the band as their only ever official drummer.
Live Bootleg is a treat for longtime fans but is liable to be slightly wasted on more current fans.

In addition to being one of the greatest American hard rock bands of the '70s (Kiss being the other one), Aerosmith developed a reputation as one of the fiercest live acts thanks to a gruelling tour schedule.
Inspired by the countless unauthorised live recordings circulating at the time, the band put out LIVE: BOOTLEG, a collection of performances recorded between 1977 and 1978, in addition to a pair of early cuts from a 1973 WBCN simulcast.
Unlike many live albums that of this time period that were overdubbed and doctored, BOOTLEG is Aerosmith at its rawest.

This rough, tough and rowdy live album brings together 16 recordings from Aerosmith's 1977-78 tour (and a couple of rarities from 1973 in the form of James Brown's "Mother Popcorn" and the Yardbirds' "I Ain't Got You").
Aerosmith are definitely at their best when live and this album captures the often mercurial, but raw, bluesy feel they had in the seventies.

Bob Dylan - Live 1975 - The Rolling Thunder Revue Bootleg 5 (Album Review)
In an attempt to cater to this market as well as expand upon Dylan’s well-deserved legacy, the first three volumes of a Bob Dylan bootleg series were officially released as a box set in 1991.
It only took four years for Volume 5 (Live 1975 — The Rolling Thunder Revue) to see the light of day, and Volume 6 (a complete 1964 concert) is promised in 2003.
As evidenced from some of the many bootlegs circulating from this tour, the entourage often pushed the music so far that it nearly spiraled out of control.

In the mid 80's there were a bunch of bad sounding live bootlegs for sale.
By '88 the band felt they could bootleg the band as well as everybody else, so they joined the crowd and released their own crappy bootleg too.
Slightly better sounding than most bootlegs of the time, only a limited pressing was made and it went out of print farily quickly.

Live bootleg: Orbital:the Edge of No Control
Phil and Paul had first played live at a pub in Kent in 1989 -- before the release of "Chime" -- and had continued to make concert performance a cornerstone of their appeal during 1991-1993, though the U.S. had remained unaware of the fact.
The concerts were just as entertaining to watch as well, with the Hartnolls' constant presence behind the banks -- a pair of flashlights attached to each head, bobbing in time to the music -- underscoring the impressive light shows and visuals.
That summer proved to be the pinnacle of Orbital's performance ascent; an appearance at Woodstock 2 and a headlining spot at the Glastonbury Festival (both to rave reviews) confirmed the duo's status as one of the premier live acts in the field of popular music, period.

Yes this album does only have 8 tracks (7 of them live), the quality of the performance and the production is pretty poor, but it does include some interesting tunes, namely "Three Mile Smile" and "Train Kept a Rollin'" that fans wouldn't expect them to put on the record.
The lions' share of "Classics Live", Aerosmith's second live album, was recorded during a February, 1984 concert.
The mix is slightly muddled, the music sounds a little uninspired, and six of these eight songs were also on the "Live Bootleg" album (why Columbia Records chose to release those instead of material which hadn't previously been available live is beyond me).

Inspired by the countless unauthorized live recordings circulating at the time, the band put out LIVE: BOOTLEG, a collection of performances recorded between 1977 and 1978, in addition to a pair of early cuts from a 1973 WBCN simulcast.
There is a fabulously raw version of 'Lord of the thighs' and a great 'Chip away the stone' but the high point of the album is the finale, 'Train Kept-a-rollin', complete with a gorgeous excerpt of 'Strangers in the night' by Joe Perry.
Along with that song and a few other Aerosmith signature songs, "Live Bootleg" showed me a bluesy side of Aerosmith I wasn't aware of, ie I Ain't Got You, Mother Popcorn.

Unlike other live albums at the time, it's obvious that not a lot of overdubbing was involved to fix up the tracks, which results in a refreshingly authentic representation of Aerosmith at the group's most drugged-out and rocking.
All of the performances were taken from Tyler and company's 1977-78 U.S. tour (with the exception of a couple from 1973), while the album's packaging and title were a joke on all the poor-sounding, unauthorized live recordings that were in circulation at the time.
