  Kids.Net.Au - Encyclopedia > Live-action roleplaying games
Live-action roleplaying (LRP and LARP in the UK; LARP in the USA; lajv, levande rollspel in Sweden; live, liverollespil, laiv, levende rollespil in Denmark) involves assuming roles, as in usual role-playing games (RPGs), and then physically playing out what the characters do.
Live Combat games are generally based around a free-running plot which develops over time, where the players play their characters over several "adventures" and/or events, and develop their characters as they improve.
When the game starts it lives its own life, wholly directed by the players (some predetermined events are often scheduled).

 The Harrow: The RPG Collection
Elements of roleplaying are still evident in many traditional tribal dances or ceremonies, but it also exists whenever somebody dresses up as Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas, for example, thus personifying a set of cultural values very dear to many Americans and Europeans by ritually donning a certain costume, mask, and set of behaviors.
Simply put, a tabletop game means that a group of players and the GM sit together face-to-face around a table (or lounging in a living room, or wherever) and play the game.
Because the games are based around action rounds or turns—a defined time within which only a certain number of activities can be undertaken by the characters—an action round or turn can be written as a letter or email message and sent out to other players, who respond by mailing (or emailing) their turns back.

 Webdrome - Live Action
Live action roleplaying (a term often shortened into LARP or LRP) is a form of roleplaying where the participants do not merely verbally describe their actions, but actually carry them out (or pretend to do so).
Live action games can be compared to improvisational theatre, where each of the participants is free to act on themselves, guided by their interpretation of the character they are playing.
Several different forms of live gaming have developed independently of each other, and the games can range from quite physical 'live combat' experiences to elaborate 'free form' plots, where the games consist of discussions, plotting and emotional immersion.

Live Roleplaying   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Most live games involve a large number of players (from thirty to several hundred at a time) who walk around and talk with each other, acting out as much of their characters' actions as are allowed within the rules.
Games are almost always single self-contained events, usually a weekend long, with the action building to a climax and resolving by the end of the game.
Because of the large amount of time and effort most groups put into their game design, and because of the near-impossibility of enforcing one's copyright over something that's been freely and widely distributed, they are generally reluctant to make their work accessible to the general public (by anonymous ftp and the like).
