 King Crimson
King Crimson, on the other hand, was a band in the pure sense of the word - despite its 'revolving door' structure.
This last incarnation of King Crimson has recently resurfaced almost intact (in 1994) and still hangs around from time to time; I suppose we'll be hearing more from these guys in centuries to come, not counting, of course, all the innumerable archive releases they keep on issuing.
One of King Crimson's main features was a constant change of sound, sometimes over a period of two or three albums, sometimes in the course of one recording session.

 Robert Fripp - Chapter 4
On January 13 1969, the first official King Crimson rehearsal took place in the basement of the Fulham Palace Cafe in London - the space that was to become their rehearsal room for the next two and a half years.
With the fervor of those months I could write for a publicity handout: 'The fundamental aim of King Crimson is to organize anarchy, to utilize the latent power of chaos and to allow the varying influences to interact and find their own equilibrium.
King Crimson drove home the point of their musical philosophy with the volume turned up so high on their amplifiers that, had they been electric blankets, they would have all broiled to death.

There was only a fragment of The Court Of Crimson King recorded on both gigs, which is another downside.
But the biggest flow of this KCCC release is that the gig from 21 November was previously released on vol.1 of the Epitaph compilation (with the exception of The Court of Crimson King).

KING CRIMSON: LIVE AT THE MARQUEE 1969
This piece, as much as "Schizoid Man," defined the early Crimson sound, and was a direct precursor to the similar piece, "In The Court of the Crimson King." Both are Mellotron-based.
All of the live performances of "Mars" thus far available (on EPITAPH and here) vary considerably from each other; it was obviously a modal platform for improvisation according to the mood of the moment.
I had heard that Crimson had been "working on" "Birdman" in 1969, playing parts of it in live performances, but this is the first recorded evidence.

The Club does, however, continue to have an artistic relevance, as is shown by the Live at the Zoom club (Club 20) - a poor quality audience recording of a very significant performance, which could have no other home.
If the Club is to continue, a newer model is needed, which will more efficiently separate ever larger numbers of fans from their hard earned pay.
We also plan to send a free remastered reissue of Club 16 Live in Berkeley to all those with existing memberships as of April 1st, or anyone who received any of Clubs 16-19, as an acknowledgement of their patience during a change in our process.

In The Wake Of Poseidon by King Crimson CD
Crimson's second album is cast very much in the same mold as its predecessor, but it expands upon the ground broken by the debut.
As on IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING, there are extended cuts comprising several discrete sections.
An important development is Fripp's increased (and increasingly sophisticated) use of the mellotron as its own instrument rather than an orchestra substitute, as seen on the album's several ominous instrumental pieces.

As you might notice, Islands-era King Crimson is very heavily represented, along with Assegai, Soft Machine and B.B. Blunder, whose Brian Godding contributes a really hot guitar solo.
On the other hand, Faust was the closest association to be made with "Pelqton", seven minutes of monotonously grinding wall-to-wall guitar noise and drum splashing beyond which pearly piano sounds, jazzy percussion and the kind of gurgling that suggest a death metal vocalist accidentally swallowing his microphone distantly echoed.
The live record Raunio (Ruins) had lots of Hawkwind-style one-chord jams with pumping bass lines and excessive distortion, but also employed the rather stentorian voice of keyboardist Mika Rättö (from Moon Fog Prophet, another Pori prog band) to create fascinating and sometimes frightening layers of drones on many numbers.
