Barnes & Noble.com Music - Live at the Rainbow -- Focus - CD - Remastered
The instrumental rockers of the early '70s never were any good at dulling down their musical expertise; and, indeed, it's only a matter of seconds into their first and only live release -- Live at the Rainbow -- until one realizes just how talented Focus were.
Live at the Rainbow featured some of the band's best and most well known tracks: "Sylvia," "Hocus Pocus," "Focus II," and so on.
Live at the Rainbow is a fine purchase for any Focus fan, or, indeed, anyone looking for a band with a good degree of originality and musical ability.

Primarily to impress the music critics at their biggest headlining concert to date at London's famous Rainbow Theatre - and to look good on film - ELO commissioned stage scenery and back projections from the album cover artwork at a cost of £3,000.
I was a little reluctant about going to see them at London's Rainbow last Friday, after a disappointing set at Croydon last year in their formative months.
The Rainbow was far from full when ELO appeared, but the people who had turned up to see the Orchestra's concert seemed well pleased with what they offered.

This didn't stop the tour from being a success, as is evidenced by this concert filmed at London's Rainbow Theatre on May 14, 1977.
The brief half hour set was recorded for television using the standard analogue valve cameras of the day, so you won't be surprised to learn that the video quality isn't as fantastic as you will find on more recent productions.
As with the video transfer, this audio transfer is sourced from the analogue master and isn't nearly as broad as a recent recording, but it does the job.

The trouble with other Monheit discs like "In the Sun" and even "Taking a Chance" (though there are a few good, jazzy cuts on the latter), is that they seem to have been aimed at a wider (not jazz-oriented) audience.
Consequently "Live at the Rainbow Room" contains my favorite versions of the songs that she has recorded on other albums.
The way she renders "Over the rainbow" is superb.

London's Rainbow looked like a Berliner Ensemble production of a rock musical version of Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse 5." The stage backdrop had been raised, revealing the grey back wall of the theatre, which had disticnt prison-camp overtones in the subdued light.
I have a feeling, as the band plays in public more and more often, that their music will become more accessible and it's members will become less and less anonymous.
And the next time they play the Rainbow, it's going to be a whole lot harder to get in.

It was a particularly beautiful and sultry evening--and, high atop Manhattan, the romance of the legendary Rainbow Room was in all its glory--a truly perfect match for the magnificent voice and presence of Jane Monheit.
I was surprised when I found out she had a live performance on DVD.I had accidentally plugged in her name into Amazon's DVD section and the "Live at the Rainbow Room" title popped up.
Well it was a lucky accident, because "Live at the Rainbow Room" presents Monheit in a delightful, intimate performance, that is a musical treat. The performance is mainly a showcase for her third and newest album, "Into the Sun", but also manages to mix other tunes from her older CDs.

The pair open the CD as if it were a live performance and set the tone for all that is to come, that is to say, very tight, live sounding numbers that have an excitement about them that you don't find on most studio recordings.
As a CD bonus, the last track is a live version of "My Baby Loves Me" and allows for Ian to revive his scatting practices while the rest of the band has ample time to show their best wares.
The disc, despite some occasionally kinky sound, represents some of the best music of the late seventies/early eighties and it is just a shame that it wasn't until twenty years later that it is first being heard but better late than never.
