  BASEBALL
Lord Rayleigh analyzed the path of a spinning ball quantitatively in the 19th century, and the curveball was firmly entrenched in baseball by the end of that century.
The resistive drag of a baseball moving at 40 meters/second is a force comparable in magnitude of the weight of the ball, which acts in the direction opposite to the velocity vector.
If the ball is popped up in the vicinity of home plate, it is often difficult to catch because of spin on the ball, which is caused by the fact that the collision of the ball with the bat is a "glancing" one, and which results in substantial horizontal motion in the ball.

 Baseball Almanac - Baseball Rules
If a batted ball is deflected by a fielder in fair territory and hits a runner or an umpire while still in flight and then caught by an infielder it shall not be a catch, but the ball shall remain in play.
If such ball rebounds and is caught by a fielder before it touches the ground, the batsman is not out on such a catch, but the ball remains in play and the batsman may be retired at first base, or touched with the ball for the out.
If a pitched ball lodges in the umpire's or catcher's mask or paraphernalia, and remains out of play, on the third strike or fourth ball, then the batter is entitled to first base and all runners advance one base.

The pitcher may pitch the ball (if the batter and umpire are ready), the batter may attempt to hit such a pitch, baserunners may attempt to advance at their own risk, and the defense may attempt to put the batter or baserunners out.
The ball becomes live when the pitcher is on the pitcher's plate ready to pitch; the batter, catcher, and the umpire are all ready; and the umpire calls or signals "Play".
Technically, the ball remains alive between half-innings, though no action can occur after the end of a half-inning until the first pitch of the next half-inning.

Baseball Prospectus | Articles | Baseball Prospectus Basics: How We Measure Pitcher Usage
As recently as 30 years ago, starters were expected to start every fourth day, with only three days of rest between starts.
Judicious use of a starting pitcher on his standard throw day between starts could net another seven or eight appearances and 10-15 innings over the course of a season.
By following these guidelines, teams should be able to safely get 280-290 innings out of their #1 starter, instead of the 220-230 innings we see today.
