The live food fish trade is centered in Hong Kong, which imports a variety of species from Southeast Asia and the South Pacific archipelagoes at a wholesale value of $500 million per year (Lau and Parry-Jones, 1999).
Once trade is underway, the status of the species must be monitored to ensure that it is maintained throughout its range at a level consistent with its role in the ecosystem.

Synopsis: Cyanide fishing is responsible for damaging coral reef habitats throughout the Indo-Pacific region and is spreading quickly as fishers respond to market demand for ornamental and edible fish.
Although imperfect -- cyanide fishing is still a great problem in the Philippines -- the CFRP provides important lessons for other countries where cyanide fishing is expanding and for the many governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and international assistance agencies worldwide that have recently become concerned about the issue.
Key to the CFRP's approach is the recognition that a cyanide-free, sustainable live fish trade should be the goal of policy, not a ban on live-fish exports (as some have advocated).

The picture that emerges from this book is extremely worrying: the LRFF trade has caused degradation of the resources on which the trade depends, and hence has to move farther and farther from the main market centers in order to continue to supply them.
The book provides scientific evidence for the need to curb and manage the capture of wild live reef food fish, and proposes ways to help entrepreneurs and fishers reform the trade based on limiting fish capture and hatchery rearing the fish.
