 NYC's Central Park turns 150
NEW YORK -- Central Park, an oasis in the city of steel, is celebrating its 150th birthday, and everyone is invited to the party.
When the park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as a grand social experiment to be shared by rich and poor people, there were doubts whether either group would feel comfortable in the new park.
A light show in the park that should be visible in all five boroughs Sept. 15 comes on the same night as a fund-raising event in which 150 apartments, hotels and clubs with views of the park will host $1,000-a-ticket dinners by New York's top chefs.

Just inside the park off 105th street, it is a breathtakingly beautiful spot filled with carefully planted flowers and trees, maintained lovingly by volunteers and well as the Parks Department.
While the park is certainly safer than many perceive it, it is not Utopia, and you wouldn't want to be lost deep in the Rambles when it gets dark.

By popular demand, the Central Park poster is now available in three sizes, a large 60"x20", a medium 39"x13" and a small 30"x10" (a more manageable size for those tiny Manhattan apartments...I know, I live here too).

On the park roads we met some people with coolers, blankets, deli bags and so on apparently they were going to have picnic somewhere in the Park, it was a nice thing to do on this hot evening.
The contrast of the vibrant City just outside the park, with the multilane streets and the traffic that never slows down significantly, and the harmony and peaceful atmosphere at the concert was great.
Just one important thing about NYC for me to point out is that this is the only place in US that we have been to with a working public transportation system.

I didn't attend yesterday's big march because, well, especially after seeing video the night before of cops shoving Critical Mass riders and bystanders into the ground and and weighing them down with knees on their necks and shoulders, being brown downtown was not something I felt safe being.
I live two blocks from Central Park and ended up joining a handful of friends and a few thousand other protesters there in the afternoon, hanging out on the Great Lawn on a beautiful day in the largest, most colorful impromptu picnic you've ever seen.
I'd also like to note that one of the best things about the day was that there were so many people of different ages in the park, not just the rebellious young punks conservatives like to believe are the only ones whining about the current situation.

It was recorded a decade after the break-up of the duo, and features a full backing band, complete with a subtle, well-used horn ensemble, and Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel perform truly excellent versions of classics like "Mrs Robinson", "The Sound Of Silence", "Homeward Bound", "The Boxer" and a magnificent "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
This album is much more lively than the duo's strictly acoustic outings from the 60s, and it is highly recommended as one of the very best live albums of the 80s, one that really adds something to the artists' legacies.
Having been a fan of the duo for some time, I felt that this album was a must have, but was worried that the live versions would not be the same.

Live King Crimson from the Larks' Tongues in Aspic era is an embarrassment of riches, and would be even if the only document was the Great Deceiver box set.
The sound quality of this recording is unfortunately not all that great - sounds like a good quality bootleg to me. A lot of the nuances get lost in the noise, but that's why this was released as a Collector's Club disc I guess.
Robert Fripp claimed that this concert, the last concert King Crimson played in the 1970s, was the only one that matched the fury and intensity of the 1969 live band.

USA is a good live album of the wrong material, with one exception, a superb and at the time otherwise unavailable track called "Asbury Park." The best live material by KC II is found on the 4CD live retrospective The Great Deceiver, which has some unique group improvs.
Recorded live in the studio, this album is in places more experimental than anything Crimson have attempted before, and IMO certainly sounds as fresh and exciting as previous albums such as Lark's Tongues in Aspic or Discipline.
