LiveCD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most LiveCDs contain a system based on the GNU system and the Linux kernel, but there are also LiveCDs based on other operating systems, such as Mac OS, Mac OS X, BeOS, FreeBSD, Minix, NetBSD, Plan 9 or Microsoft Windows, though the legal status of LiveCDs based on Windows code is dubious.
The first OS to support LiveCD operations appears to have been Mac OS 7 on a CD and any other user-created Macintosh CD with a System Folder, which could be brought to a full desktop from a CD-ROM, in 1991.
LiveCDs have a reputation for supporting advanced Auto-configuration and Plug-and-play functionality.

Some LiveCDs come with an installation utility launchable from a desktop icon that can optionally install the system on a hard drive (Computer hardware that holds and spins a magnetic or optical disk and reads and writes information on it) or USB (additional info and facts about USB) keydrive (additional info and facts about keydrive).
Most LiveCDs can access the information on internal and/or external harddrives, diskette (A small plastic magnetic disk enclosed in a stiff envelope with a radial slit; used to store data or programs for a microcomputer) s and USB (additional info and facts about USB) Flash memories (additional info and facts about Flash memories).
On a PC (A small digital computer based on a microprocessor and designed to be used by one person at a time), a bootable CD generally conforms to the El Torito (additional info and facts about El Torito) specification which treats a special file on the disc (possibly hidden) as a floppy diskette image.

 Elive
You should not see Elive as a common LiveCD, that word can't explain what it really is. First of all, Elive has one of the best hardware autodetection and selfconfiguration of the linux systems, as well as a wide support for different kinds of monitors.
Elive is not only a liveCD, but also a debian based distribution (actually in etch) that can be installed on the harddisk.
The installation differs from every other liveCD, there have been much work to make it clean (common live cd installations are pretty buggy).

 Creating a Fedora Core 4 LiveCD - FedoraNEWS.ORG
All parts of the filesystem that need to be runtime-writable are placed under a special folder in the filesystem root (/livecd), and are symlinked back to their previous locations.
Since all writable parts are located under /livecd, they can also be stored in an archive which is used at runtime to populate the tmpfs filesystem that will be mounted on /livecd.
Test the livecd on either the system you used for the build, or on another system which is known to work with the current fedora core release (and kernel).

Using a liveCD as your Linux Desktop
Most of the "Desktop" Linux liveCD distributions (distros) are meant to to be used for trying out or demoing Linux before installing them to your hard drive.
However, many liveCD distros can be used as a day to day desktop without ever installing them to your hard drive.
Also, Linux liveCDs can often be installed and booted from a USB drive (thanks to some excellent standards around booting from USB drives).

Assess system security using a Linux LiveCD
A LiveCD is an operating system (plus other software) stored on a bootable CD-ROM from which the OS can be executed without having to go through time-consuming installation.
Some LiveCDs come with an installation utility that lets you install the system on a hard drive or USB keydrive; most can access information on internal/external hard drives, disks, and Flash memories.
Developing a LiveCD in this way is tricky due to the very nature of the way you develop and then build a live CD distribution.

Building a Windows LiveCD with Bart's PE for Linux users - LinuxQuestions.org
I remembered a Slashdot article on a Windows LiveCD project, so I decided that would be the best solution for my problem.
Again, compared to the richness and diversity of the applications packaged with Knoppix and its variants (where what you get with the LiveCD is a fully functional Linux OS and userland), PE LiveCD's are pretty lame.
In conclusion, a Bart's PE LiveCD is a nifty tool for us Linux users who only need to occasionally boot into Windows to run a simple utility, and don't want to waste hard-drive space for a full Windows install.

Once the packages had been installed and it was time to create users I created one user called livecd with no password and set password as admin123 for root.
A workaround to this problem could be to extend the linuxrc script to use some sort of grep for a particular string (such as the string "Live CD" on the /etc/issue file) of the mounted LIVECD to make sure we have mounted the correct one.
The reason one is able to become root using su is because su itself is executed as the root user using a special permission bit called the suid bit.
