In 1891 the tunnel was extended to Liverpool Central station from the orginal terminus at James Street station, on the Wirral various commuter branch lines were built.
The Mersey Railway connected Liverpool and Birkenhead via the Mersey Railway Tunnel under the River Mersey from 1886, by 1890 it was carrying 10 million passengers a year.
In 1903, it was electrified, becoming the first railway in the world to change over completely from steam to electric power.
