Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Composed in collaboration with Carl Davis to commemorate Liverpool's 150th anniversary, the project received a large amount of media attention upon its unveiling in June 1991.
Broken up into eight separate movements, the story of the oratorio loosely follows McCartney's own lifeline, with the main character, Shanty, who is born in 1942 in Liverpool, raised to believe that "being born where you are born carries with it certain responsibilities".
This recording was captured at the oratorio's premiere at the Liverpool Cathedral with McCartney in attendance and features noted professional classical singers Kiri Te Kanawa, Jerry Hadley, Sally Burgess and Willard White re-enacting the roles in the oratorio.

 Liverpool Oratorio - Vogue Australia
Now the public can decide for itself: the world premiere of his Liverpool Oratorio — which was performed in June in the Merseyside city’s imposing Anglican Cathedral — was recorded by EMI Classics, and is due for release this month.
The work, commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society to celebrate its 150th anniversary, saw McCartney team up with conductor-composer Carl Davis to work with the talents of opera soloists Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Sally Burgess, Jerry Hadley and Willard White, with backing by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the choir of Liverpool Cathedral.
The semi-autobiographical tale of Shanty, a Liverpool war baby growing to manhood — and Everyman finding himself, and peace, through family harmony — isn’t a storyline that is going to set the classical world alight, and there are parts where the oratorio gets bogged down in its own solemnity.

Paul was officially commissioned to compose a work and, two years ago, he and Carl sat down for the first of hundreds of hours spent at their homes writing, scoring and re-scoring.
The Liverpool Oratorio deals in part with the story of Paul's life in Liverpool; his birth in the city during wartime, his schooldays, his parents and meeting his wife Linda.
A single C.D. version of the Liverpool Oratorio was released one year later in October 1992 which has about 20 minutes edited from it.

Recorded at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral in 1991, Paul McCartney, along with Carl Davies, succeeded in his attempt at composing a classical oratorio, with orchestral delights to rival earlier arrangements of his time with the Beatles and Wings.
Loosely based on his own life, being born in wartime Liverpool, the Oratorio follows the life of Shanty, and explores the many themes of normal life, such as the loss of loved ones, school, the trials of marriage and eventualy birth and new beginnings.
The lead voices are complemented by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Liverpool Cathedral Choristers and the Cathedral Singers, all playing and singing to an impressively high standard.
