Above the Law (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1989, they released their first album, Livin' Like Hustlers, on Ruthless Records.
Above The Law was a black gangsta rap group founded in late 1987 in Pomona, California by Cold 187um (also known as Big Hutch; born Gregory Hutchinson), K.M.G the Illustrator (born Kevin Dulley), Total K-Oss (born Anthony Stewart) and Go Mack (born Arthur Goodman).
Above The Law is primarily responsible for creating the G-Funk sound that would later influence West Coast rap stars like Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and Tupac Shakur.

The song is not based on dying in L.A, it's based on living in L.A. I mean, the whole song is like a huge memory and dedication to L.A, like Tupac's going to miss L.A while he fakes his death...
It's like a big shout out to L.A, cause now he has to go through with his plan and he wants everyone to know that he loves L.A and he is true to the city...
Like lightning Pac took off running, and I took off running behind him....this is when the fight with Orlando Anderson happened.

 Live Reviews
Like a noiser and grubbier Kings of Leon, these guys are permanently engulfed in a cloud of pot smoke, and although they play music that might be a little too groovy and bouncy to soundtrack a night getting high it certainly has the right tone for more debauched times.
Yet it is her crazed theatrics that provide the real spectacle; the scratching and violent spasms, the head-banging and the self-choking and the vicious attacks on her guitarist who gets a split-lip, a stiletto heel in his hip and a smack in the head with the mic stand just for starters.
The band look like they can't quite believe they are playing a show of this size and you can't help but warm towards their innocence and gratitude.

Their first solid gold album, "Livin' Like Hustlers" was on the walkman of many citizens of the fair planet Earth, including portions of Massey's population, namely some young man named MC Boss MC.
But it was like 89 since the last time we'd seen them, and Above The Law surprised us by bursting back onto the scene with their self-titled album, "Black Mafia Life".
There are a couple of decent tracks like "Clinic 2000" and "Killaz In The Park," but on the whole it isn't worth repeated listening, unless you are killing time, or playing a game of "Wario's Woods." That basically brings us back to their 1998 release.

I'm probably wrong about this, but ATL's Livin' Like Hustlers album was the first that I recalled Dr. Dre handling that was outside of the WWC and NWA camps and Dr. is simply killing it on the entire LP with cut after cut of the sickest funk breaks you could imagine.
Cali-for-nigh-aaaaay!" Twist up the W. I included another D.O.C. cut as a bonus track: the hip-house remix of "Portrait of a Masterpiece." The LP version is on some fast n' furious steez but Dre dips back to his WWC days me thinks for this version.
If anything, what folks like Dr. Dre, DJ Pooh, Sir Jinx (just to name the most obvious cats) were putting together was as hard-edged as anything you'd hear from the five boroughs.

Lemme break it down like this.Livin' Like Hustlas,ATL's debut LP dropped in 1990 right after NWA's Straight Outta Compton gained mainstream attention with no radio or video play but because of their street tales, slammin west coast gangsta funk beats, and the explicitness and vulgarity used to get their point across.
If u like West Coast Gangsta Rhymes and slammin Cali Funk, Livin Like Hustlaz will be sutable medication for your sickness.
From the PE sampled noise rush Murder Rap, to the relaxed smoked out Last Song, through Another Execution, Freedom of Speech, Flowin, and the rest, this album is musically, and lyrically Above most anything from its time.

cash money was fine when i was like 16 and i still didnt really know what hiphop was all about but, hiphop is in a state of decline and its because of the monotonous nonsensical jibberish that these guys get rich off of.

Entertaining only in the most dismal sense, Livin' Like Hustlers (which features Ruthless label boss Eazy-E and lead producer Dr. Dre on "The Last Song") is less intimidating than it is unpleasant.
The trio's political depth doesn't go much beyond "the system is always trying to keeping us down" (as "Set Free" inarticulates), however, and most of the album is a pernicious return to the gangsta banality of Livin' Like Hustlers.
Vocally Pimpin' is a lengthy EP of new tracks (the most captivating of which, "Wicked," reveals an incidental political sensibility), studio chat, remixes — including three dissimilar versions of the non-LP "4 the Funk of It" — and promotional announcements for the then-upcoming second album.
