Living History - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Activities related to "reenactment" are not new; there were tournaments in the Middle Ages which would have Roman or other earlier themes, and the Victorians recreated medieval furnishings, such as tapestries.
However, historical reenactment as a serious pursuit of practical historical interest, beyond mere "wash-and-wear wizardry" (re-inventing history as an entertainment to suit contemporary convenience or sensibilities), seems to be an invention of the 20th century.
The term living history describes attempts to bring history to life, either for an audience, or for the participants themselves.

One of the most exciting things that has happened for students of history and the general public in recent years is the creation of living history museums.
With the living museum as motivation, the students will approach the necessary historical research on a much more personal and immediate level than they would if the assignment were to write a report, answer questions on a test, or even create a display.
Keep in mind that many of the "real" living history museums train their interpreters in a few weeks and most of that training is background history of the period in general.
