It is located approximately 25 km west of Edinburgh and 50 km east of Glasgow, and is bordered by the towns of Broxburn to the east and Bathgate to the west.
Livingston itself is the 13th largest town or city in Scotland according to the 2001 census with a population of 41,647.
Livingston was built as part of the New Towns Act of 1946 (amended 1959), in part to ease overcrowding in Glasgow.
