Liz Phair (born Elizabeth Clark Phair on April 17, 1967 in New Haven, Connecticut) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist.
Phair is adopted, as is her older brother Philip.
Phair's third album, titled whitechocolatespaceegg, was finally released in 1998 after some delays, which included a disagreement about content; at one point, the label rejected the album as submitted, and asked Phair to write a few additional radio-friendly songs for the set.

Liz Phair: self-titled - PopMatters Music Review (via CobWeb/3.1 planet03.csc.ncsu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Liz Phair now has a mere four albums under her belt, and today, this once-adored darling of indie rock is a mere shadow of her former self.
Phair has never been one to shy away from speaking her mind, and her new record is nothing more than a hearty "fuck you" to everyone who bought her first two albums, as she tries to become the next Avril Lavigne.
Liz Phair, on the other hand, has grown increasingly more shallow as the years have gone by, and has reached a career nadir with a new album that practically begs to be noticed, simultaneously trying to be controversial and radio-friendly without knowing which to settle for, and ends up being a colossal, muddled disaster.

Its infectious hooks belie Phair's edgy exploration of the thrills of a new and forbidden crush, liberally spiked with her trademark wordplay.
Liz Phair also rocks with bold authority-ranging from lush acoustic strum and fist-pumping power chords to trippy garage rock, it features her most crafted, rich sound yet.
Using just her name alone as the album title suggests this is Phair at her most uncut and naked, saying almost "This is me-take it or leave it." After exposure to Liz Phair's powerful first-person narratives-variously naughty, wistful, sexual, and humorous, often all at the same time-chances are you'll take it.

Produced in separate but equal parts by Liz herself, Scott Litt (REM), and Brad Wood (the previous two Liz albums), whitechocolatespaceegg is something of a leap from the homespun intimacy of her other work.
LIZ PHAIR has been plenty busy in the four years since Whip-Smart, during which time she's seen the creative and commercial climate for female artists flourish under her influence.
While in the past Liz has only toured sporadically, and even then often doing solo acoustic performances, she will be touring with a full band for this album, first on several Lilith Fair (Phair?) dates this summer (July 15 through mid-August 1998), then full international touring beginning in September 1998.

Where she used to be smart and provocative, Phair has become crass and bloated, her lyrics crude and her image apparently a grotesque exercise in self-parody.
That's the Liz the critics loved and have never forgiven her for not remaining -- barefoot and in the bedroom churning out clever 4-track gems for all time.
But the poppy sheen doesn't make it any less distinctively a Liz Phair album, and the song writing and lyrics are as sharp as ever, along with her very effective guitar technique and unique, one-of-a-kind voice that fans like me love.
