The Project Gutenberg eBook of Liza of Lambeth, by Somerset Maugham
Liza saw what a sensation she was creating; she arched her back and lifted her head, and walked down the street, swaying her body from side to side, and swaggering along as though the whole place belonged to her.
Liza when she was dressing herself in the morning, felt the hardness of fate in the impossibility of eating one's cake and having it; she wished she had reserved her new dress, and had still before her the sensation of a first appearance in it.
Liza quite forgot her companion, and was intent on the scene; she watched the incidents breathlessly, trembling with excitement, almost beside herself at the celebrated hanging incident.

Based on W Somerset Maugham's first novel, this musical tells the story of an impoverished but charismatic young girl, Liza Kemp, who tragically falls for an older, married man the only person she'd ever met who shared her dreams for the future.
Literary legend has it that before he died, Maugham instructed his lifelong friend and agent, Spencer Curtis Brown, never to allow his novel to be turned into a straight play, and even suggested it had the potential to become a stage musical.
But Liza of Lambeth is, nonetheless, a cockney romp of a performance, packed with comedy moments and show-stopping songs.

 Threepenny: Colegate, Somerset Maugham
Liza of Lambeth, Maugham's first novel, was published in 1897, when Maugham was a twenty-three-year-old medical student.
The novel is hard to read now because of the stage Cockney of the dialogue and the lurid melodrama of the plot, but it dealt courageously with the dire conditions of the very poor in the East End of London.
The realism, the acute observation of externals, the determination to look life square in the eye, was directed to a higher level of society—brittle cocktail women succeeded the earthy Liza, though the whore with the heart of gold makes regular reappearances.
