It is the southermost tip of mainland Britain, at 49°57' N, and, with the exception of parts of the Isles of Scilly is the southernmost part of England.
The tiny villages of Lizard and Landewednack are located one kilometre north of the point, but the nearest settlement of any substantial size is Helston, 18 kilometres to the north.
The RNLI operate a funicular railway at Kilcobben Cove, three kilometres northwest of the point, enabling boats to traverse the steep cliffs, and there are foghorns and a distinctive double-towered lighthouse close to the point.

The Lizard peninsula is of a oceanic crust nature and formed at a sea-spreading centre.
Furthermore a study of the faults within the Lizard rocks reveals that they were produced at a slow spreading center, there dip being in average 30, these angles are known to be characteristic of these kinds of spreading centres.

The ship is now in a stable position 45 miles (72km) south east of the Lizard and a salvage contract has been agreed.
The 16-year-old vessel is registered to London, and was last inspected by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in May 2005 when officials said it met safety standards.
