Lizard (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lizard is the second King Crimson album to be recorded by a transitional line-up of the group that never had the opportunity to perform live, following In the Wake of Poseidon.
Lizard is arguably King Crimson's most jazz-inflected album, developing further in the direction suggested by the track "Cat Food" on In the Wake of Poseidon (also released as a single).
The album's outside cover consists of the words 'King Crimson' spelled out in ornate medieval lettering, the word 'King' on the back cover and the word 'Crimson' on the front cover, with each letter incorporating one or two discrete images.

Ground and Sky review - King Crimson - Lizard
Lizard's a good example of the 'imperfect but interesting' prog album from the early days, as prog bands were stretching out and playing with different ideas.
Released in 1970, Lizard is King Crimson's third album and fairly typical of the early KC sound and structure.
Lizard has some moments, but it is not one of their best, and my guess is that Fripp is not fond of it either, because not much of Lizard shows up on the box sets or live recordings up to this point.

King Crimson : Lizard - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Lizard is very consciously jazz-oriented -- the influence of Miles Davis (particularly Sketches of Spain) being especially prominent -- and very progressive, even compared with the two preceding albums.
The doom-laden mood of the first two albums is just as strong, except that the music is prettier; the only thing missing is a sense of humor.
At the time of its release, some critics praised Lizard for finally breaking with the formula and structure that shaped the two preceding albums, but overall it's an acquired taste.

Jesus Lizard   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Goat is truly the quintessential Jesus Lizard album and goes a good way in helping the hapless listener to understand them by literally giving the listener a language with which to describe the experience.
Although Albini chose a tinny bass sound for this album (a sound he has used on some of his own Shellac albums) songs such as "Horse" where the use of organ is an incredibly effective mood setter, and "Elegy" show a new lush elegance not heard on prior OR future recordings.
The Lizard is interesting because all these bands spent the late eighties and or early nineties receiving critical praise but JL was not interested in making pop or rock music in any recognizable form.

Since 1994 Trip Lizard has been dazzling the independent music landscape with their eclectic musical mix of funk, rap, soul, ska and rock.
Their stage presence and staying power was on full display in the fall of 2002 when they finished in the top ten out of more than 350 bands in The Hard Rock Café's national battle of the bands competition.

The Jesus Lizard was formed by Duane Denison (guitar), David Yow (vocals), and David Sims (bass), the latter two being former members of the Austin-based post-hardcore noise group Scratch Acid.
The fact that the Jesus Lizard released a record on a major label caused tension between the band and their longtime producer, Steve Albini, who was notorious for his indie-centric beliefs.
The resulting album, Shot, was released on Capitol in the spring of 1996.

 Lizard by King Crimson CD
LIZARD can be seen as the third album in the trilogy that makes up Crimson's first phase, which began with IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING.
Indeed LIZARD is a complex album, and many a time I've heard it derided and totally under appreciated.
However, while KC albums 1 and 2 (COURT & IN THE WAKE...) are some much out of the same mold (and wonderfully so), LIZARD brought so many of their underlying elements to the fore.

This is an amazing album, which on first hearing irritates the ear and alienates the listener.
There is a generous warmth to the arrangements which reflect the traditionalism of the overall attitude, but there remains enough salt and trepadation in the performances to keep the material light on its feet.

 King Crimson - Lizard (1970)
The first side of Lizard is not what I would call the best Crimson, don't get me wrong, it's very good, but compared to what KC can do, it falls a bit short.
So Lizard ended up showing up in stores as a stand-alone entity, with no singer in the band and, as drummer Andy McCullough had also left, no band at all to tour behind the album.

Coming off the strengths of In The Court Of The Crimson King and In The Wake Of Poseidon, two albums that I found myself enjoying immensely despite myself (it took me a long time to truly appreciate King Crimson), their third album Lizard left me a little disappointed.
Likewise, "The Battle Of Glass Tears" is a number that doesn't seem to last nearly half as long as the album jacket suggests (the track clocks in at just under 11 minutes).
Lizard is a step down for King Crimson, but not one that would cause me to lose interest in the band.

Elephant Talk: Lizard   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
On Lizard, his mellotron scapes, polished acoustic guitar and fairy-tale Fender Rodes are a far cry from the abrasive textures of Court and In the Wake, and a different universe from the metallic guitar webs of Aspic and Discipline.
It seems like this album is Fripp's first hand at composing for and conducting a large number of musicians, and he really puts himself to the test on the track "Lizard".
Lizard is one of those rare albums - absolute brilliance from start to finish and light years ahead of its time.

Goat - The Jesus Lizard - Song Listings
The Jesus Lizard's second album followed in the vein of the first with little immediate variation: loud, excellently produced by Steve Albini, plenty of space in the recording to emphasize the sheer force of McNeilly's drums and Sims' bass, and more besides.
Other treats on the album include the opening "Here Comes Dudley" -- in context one of the more non-welcoming greetings around -- and the Morricone-tinged freakout of "Lady Shoes," assuming Morricone scored movies about doctors dealing with some freaky female patients.
The whole album seems like a party in hell, not to mention demonstrative proof that there's still plenty of fun to be had with a basic rock lineup; it's all in the matter of how it's handled.

Head, was their first full-length album and was recorded when all four Lizards shared the same digs.
It was more textured, precise, and surreal than their previous ventures, but combined all the pain, all the sex, and all the power of it's predecessors to take the band even further into uncharted musical territory.
THE JESUS LIZARD lifted "Puss" from the Liar album and NIRVANA donated their all new raw reminiscence "Oh, The Guilt" to the now legendary semi-limited edition split single of January '93.

The album roars open with what might still be the finest rock single of all time, "Boilermaker," and Yow sets the standard for lyric writing on this album with impressionist glimpses at his topic (in this case, infidelity, with a strong implication of murder involved as well), and for the next thirty-five minutes, you're hooked.
The one thing this album lacks is David Yow...I didn't get the same vibe with this album as I did with their others...

Combine country and bluegrass melodies with the type of irreverent, authority-questioning lyrics you'd expect from a rock & roll or folk act, and you've got the Austin Lounge Lizards, whose sense of humor is impossible to miss on Lizard Vision.
Not all of the songs have sociopolitical references; on "He's Just a Friend" and Roger Waters' "Brain Damage," for example, the Lizards simply enjoy some healthy, good-natured goofiness for the sake of goofiness.
Arguably, Lizard Vision is the band's most essential release.

At its best, the Jesus Lizard could crank out some of its era's best noise core, though like everything in that genre, its wares are a bit clumsy for frequent household use.
All of the usual elements on a Jesus Lizard album are here, only not quite as pointed.
Not a collection for the squeamish, or the casual fan, for that matter, Bang drags the Jesus Lizard back from its death last year, reminding us that while the band held moments of genius, most notably for its abilities to work a crowd, it also had its share of forgettable ones too.
