Like other reptiles, lizards are abundant in the tropics, although some species live as far north as the Arctic circle.
The common or viviparous lizard (Lacerta vivipara), about 15 cm/6 in long, is found throughout Europe; in the far north, it hibernates through the long winter.
The creature appeared to be a great lizard at least ten feet high, with a huge, powerful tail as long as its torso, mighty hind legs and short forelegs.

Lizard Head Wilderness lies astride the spectacular San Miguel Mountains, (10 miles southwest of Telluride and 40 miles northeast of Cortez) on the Uncompahgre and San Juan National Forests.
The wilderness is evenly split between the two national forests and is 41,193 acres in size.

Parking at the trailhead of the Lizard Head Wilderness, I waited for some lightning activity as a rainstorm passed.

Although the trail in Tinta Canyon is a motorcycle trail (Lizard Head itself is in the Dick Smith Wilderness, but this portion of the trail is on the wilderness boundary), it doesn't get nearly the level of use that the motorcycle trails near Tecuya Mountain and Lockwood Point attract.
The discouraging part, though, was that once we were at the top and asked the inevitable question ("Where's the peak?"), Mars looked way off in the distance, not to the next ridge, but the one past it, and pointed to a rocky speck way way out on that distant ridge.
The good news is that for most of the way from the Tinta ridge out to Lizard Head there was an old firebreak we would follow.

Last week, Sierra Club volunteers packed into vans to shuttle to a Lizard Head Wilderness camp just north of Woods Lake, embarking on a weeklong trail maintenance project as part of the U.S. Forest Service Norwood District Office's summer trail maintenance program.
The Sierra Club works late summer each year in the Sneffels or Lizard Head wilderness areas as part of the environmental group's service-oriented, volunteer trips.
The areas where groups can be hosted are restricted to those designated "wilderness": locally, that includes Mt. Sneffels and the Lizard Head Wilderness Areas.
