This serpentine provided at one time an industry for the Lizard peninsula, producing items such ornamental slabs, pillars etc..., however it soon appeared that the cracks in the rock, which were decorative, also meant that it could not be used in constructions, and the industry dwindled.
The Lizard peninsula is of a oceanic crust nature and formed at a sea-spreading centre.
The Lizard peninsula is thus a result of tectonic activity, developing at the mid-Atlantic ridge.

Most of the peninsula has been declared as a site of special scientific interest or is owned by the National Trust and as a result it has remained mostly unchanged and unspoilt.
The centre area of the peninsula has poor soil and is covered with Cornish heath, western gorse, bell heather and several rare species of plants which over the years become even more rare as the unenlightened tend to disturb them.

On the flattest parts of the peninsula underlain by serpentine, we find a fine quartz-rich windblown dust (loess) that was derived from the area now occupied by the Celtic Sea during the last cold phase of the Ice Age.

Kynance Cove is a well known beach and coastal cliff section at the tip of the Lizard Peninsula, 16km south of Helston, just to the east of the village of Lizard.
The southern half of the Peninsula comprises a complex array of metamorphic and igneous rocks including serpentinite, schist, gabbro and granite, which are faulted up against Devonian slates along a boundary running roughly between Mullion Island and Nare Point.
