AG-42 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Automatgevär m/42 (Ag m/42), commonly known as the AG42, the AG-42 or the Ljungman, is a Swedish semi-automatic rifle.
The factory, AB C.J. Ljungmans Verstader, reportedly a Gas pump manufacturer and located Malmö, was owned by Eklund.
The Ljungman used removable 10-round magazines, fired the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser cartridge, and later evolved into the Egyptian Hakim Rifle, once Sweden sold their machinery to the Egyptians.

Even with the adoption of the semi-automatic AG42B rifle, the Mauser bolt actions continued service until 1965, when Sweden completely converted to the Nato G3 rifle made by Hecker and Koch of Germany.
The Ljungman gas system eliminates the use of an intermediary piston, and the gas directly operates the bolt through an extension on the carrier.
The AG42B accepts the same bayonet as used by the M95 and M38 rifles.

AR-10 - Indopedia, the Indological knowledgebase
From the FAL it took the hinged receiver area, which allowed the rifle to be "folded open" for cleaning.
From the Ljungman AG42B it took the unique gas operating system.
Most systems allowed the gas to move a short distance from a hole in the barrel into a chamber where it pushed on a rod that drove the bolt.

[M1-m14] Question J C Garand Match.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The FN49, Hakim and the AG42 Ljungman have magazines that are removable, but not really detatchabe (not designed for reloading by replacing the magazine) but rather replentished by stripper clips.
AG42B magazines are all most impossible to find for sale, and when they can be found them make genuine GI M14 magazines look CHEAP!
There would not be any more dis-similarity between the foreign bolt guns and the foreign gas guns than between the M1 Garand and carbine versus the M1903/M1903A3 and the M1917.

While this may have been true with the original IMR powder the rifle was developed with, it was not the case with the more finely-grained, faster-burning ball powder that was considerably "dirtier".
The direct impingement gas operating system, adapted from the Swedish Ljungman AG42B and the French MAS 49 series of rifles, used an open tube along the top of the barrel that vented gas back directly onto the front of the bolt.
In normal designs the gas pressed on a spring-loaded operating rod which pushed back the bolt or bolt carrier, so the system was fairly "clean".

While this may have been true with the original IRM powder the rifle was developed with, the Army switched to a new higher-powered ball powder that was considerably "dirtier".
The firing mechanism, adapted from the Ljungman AG42B, used an open tube from the front of the barrel that vented gas directly onto the front of the bolt.
In normal designs the gas pressed on a rod which operated the bolt, so the system was fairly "clean".

Doug again discusses both ammunition and mechanical function as possible causes but expand the firearms to include AR-15 and Ljungman AG42B.
When using a rifle such as the MAS 49 and AG42B (I have had reports of the AG42B slam firing), you should never place the catridge on the top of the magazine and let the bolt slam home on it.
Always load the cartridge into the magazine and load the rifle's chamber from the magazine.
