The village was originally known as Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll and was renamed in the 19th century in an attempt to develop the village as a commercial and tourist centre.
Today the village is still signposted as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, marked on Ordnance Survey maps as Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll and is known to locals as Llanfairpwll or simply Llanfair.
The first ever meeting of the Women's Institute took place in Llanfairpwll in 1915 and the movement (which began in Canada) then spread through the rest of the British Isles.

Llanfairpwll, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Llanfair PG, or even the full monstrosity, no other place on the North Wales coast is known by so many names.
It was modified in 1893 to allow a gate wheel and larger 18-lever frame to be installed, but by the mid 70s, the gates were handworked and only 4 levers were in use.
At Llanfairpwll, of course, it was just another class 40 hauled train - not as common as they once had been, but not yet remarkable.

Its full name is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch which means The Church of St Mary in the hollow of the white hazel near the rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio near a red cave, although it is usually shortened to Llanfairpwll or Llanfair P.G..
The extended name is almost certainly the work of a local tailor who wanted to put the village on the map in the mid 1800’s.
One of Llanfairpwll’s unusual claims to fame is that the Women’s Institute movement was founded here in 1915.
