Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust - Projects - Longer - Historic Churches - Montgomeryshire Churches Survey - Llangedwyn
Llangedwyn Church is in the Diocese of St Asaph, in the community of Llangedwyn in the county of Powys.
St Cedwyn's at Llangedwyn, 7 miles south-west of Oswestry, is a small Victorian church that incorporates earlier, possibly medieval, masonry in its west and east walls, and also retains a Romanesque-style porch of earlier 19thC date.
The churchyard at Llangedwyn is now an irregular 'butterfly' shape, due to extensions on both the south in 1870 and the east (in 1905 and later).

Councillors met to decide whether to merge Llangedwyn Primary School, controlled by the Church in Wales, with dilapidated Llanrhaeadr Primary School.
Llangedwyn's lessons are generally in English, but it does teach Welsh.
Llangedwyn's roll of pupils had been rising from 13 in 1977 to 50 this year, he said.

BBC NEWS | Wales | Mid Wales | Boycott threat over school closure
Llangedwyn school, which has 49 pupils, will close if the county council gives the go-ahead for a bigger area school at Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.
But Llangedwyn's head teacher John Parkinson says a survey of parents there shows most live outside the new school's catchments area and none of the pupils would attend the new school.
Llangedwyn county councillor Harry Hughes said he was still confident the board's decision would be overturned by the full council.

BBC NEWS | Wales | Mid Wales | Heads back new £1.7m school
Llangedwyn school, with 48 pupils, could close if councillors chose an option to build an area school at Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant to replace the current decaying Victorian building.
But building an area school at Llanrhaeadr for 150 pupils would cost £1.85m and mean pupils from Llangedwyn school would have to travel five miles further.
Llangedwyn head teacher John Parkinson said: "The families of children attending this school will not send their children to the proposed new school at Llanrhaeadr.

 GENUKI : Llangedwyn, St. Cedwyn
The parish was originally a chapelry of Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, comprising (according to Archdeacon Thomas) the townships of Llangedwyn and Esgair Gwgan.
When Civil Registration was introduced (on 1 July 1837), the parish of Llangedwyn was assigned to the No. 3 ("Llanrhaeadr") sub-district of the Llanfyllin Registration District; which was co-extensive with the Llanfyllin poor law Union.

Mr Davies said although Welsh was not spoken as much at Llangedwyn, it was widely used at Llanrhaeadr, and was often the chosen language spoken in the playground.
"Pupil numbers at Llangedwyn have grown from 13 to slightly over 50 and it is one of a very few schools in the county that is over-subscribed.
Mr Davies said today he was behind the council's children, families and lifelong learning committee's earlier recommendation to leave Llangedwyn School open and build a new facility to replace the school in Llanrhaeadr.

Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust - Projects - Historic Landscapes - The Tanat Valley - Llangedwyn
Llangedwyn was a single township in the commote of Mochnant Is Rhaeadr, Denbighshire, having originally, like Llanarmon-mynydd-mawr, been a dependent chapelry within the ecclesiastical parish of Llanrhaeadr-ym-mochnant.
Despite this, there is no clear evidence for the existence of early nucleated at Llangedwyn during the medieval period, and most the surviving settlement evidence belongs to the 17th-century onwards.
The present church of St Cedwin's church, Llangedwyn, was rebuilt under the patronage of the Williams-Wynn family in 1869-70, but evidence of early medieval activity is represented by a decorated cross slab, set up against the eastern end of the church.

Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust - Projects - Historic Landscapes - The Tanat Valley - Glantanat
The land lies on gravels and alluvium and is generally well drained, though old river meanders are represented by fairly extensive areas of waterlogging and standing water alongside the river as well as by dry palaeochannels represented by undulations in the surface.
A majority of the field boundaries appear to be set out in relation to the turnpike road between Llangedwyn and Llanrhaeadr, and it therefore seems likely that they represent 18th-century enclosure of formerly unenclosed meadow in a number of townships bordering the river.
The main road between Llangedwyn and Llanrhaeadr is a turnpike road built in the later 18th century and probably replacing a route which ran across higher ground to the north.

Preserved counties of Wales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The preserved counties were originally almost identical to the 1974—1996 counties, but with a few minor changes intended to ensure preserved counties were composed of whole principal areas.
Llanrhaedr-ym-Mochant, Llansilin and Llangedwyn were transferred from Clwyd to Powys, and Wick, St Brides Major, Ewenny and Pentyrch were transferred from Mid Glamorgan to South Glamorgan.
However, these changes still left two county boroughs, Conwy and Caerphilly split between preserved counties.
