The central agricultural provinces are traversed by several important rivers, all of them rising on the western slopes of the snow-clad Andes and breaking through the lower coast range to the Pacific after being extensively used to irrigate the great central valley of Chile.
In the desert provinces the population is limited to the mining communities, and to the ports and supply stations maintained for their support and for the transport, smelting and export of their produce.
The province of Atacama has, in addition to its mining population, a considerable number of agriculturists located in a few irrigated river valleys, which class is largely increased in the adjoining province of Coquimbo.

The town contained 1,500 inhabitants who were attacked in the Indian uprising that supported the 1859 revolt of the northern and southern provinces against the central government, with the Mapuches killing the men, destroying the crops, and carrying off the women and the cattle.

In this region, the eastern portion of Llanquihue, there was a comparatively narrow coastal strip covered with dense evergreen forest which included even the rounded summits of the lower mountains.

Further south, in Chiloe continental and in the northern portion of Aysen province, where the main chain of the Andes comes nearer the coast, and also inland from the high snow or ice-covered peaks on the eastern or Argentine side, the configuration was much less rugged.

Letelier's team determined on Jul. 9 that the so-called "Monster of Los Muermos", an inert, gelatinous mass whose stench became increasingly nauseating as it sat on Pinuno beach in the community of Los Muermos, was nothing more than the carcass of a deep-water sperm whale.
A resident of Pinuno, located in Llanquihue province, 60 km north of Puerto Montt and some 1,050 km south of the Chilean capital, alerted the Chilean navy to the presence of the massive remains on Jun. 26.
A week later, news had spread worldwide, including the first conjectures -- it was a whale, a giant octopus, or an enormous squid.

The Anuario reports a 3.2 km animal-powered tramway in Llanquihue province in 1927, and a similar 3 km line in Chiloé province in 1928, 1929 and 1930.
[The Anuario does not name tramway cities after 1921 nor report any tram data after 1930: see BIBLIOGRAPHY.] Both lines are believed to be the same tramway in Puerto Montt, which was the capital of Llanquihue province until 1927, and became the capital of an enlarged Chiloé province in 1928.
A series of inquiries to Puerto Montt's mayor finally elicited a reply from a local journalist who offered to supply the author with information about the city's tramway history for 80,000 Chilean pesos, or about U.S. The author declined.
