Under an act of f 791 harbour trustees were appointed who cleared and deepened the river bed and built a long pier on either side of it; in I 796 the approach to the port was made safer by means of an improved light on Mumbles Head.
Meanwhile in 1798 the whole coalfield of the Swansea Valley was connected with the port by a canal 161/2 m.
The Swansea Valley canal has a connecting lock with this dock, and on the island between the dock and the New Cut are patent fuel works, copper ore yards and other mineral sheds and large grain stores and flour mills.

Soon you will see a small valley ahead with a stream; follow any track to the right which keeps the valley about 100 yards on your left.
As the valley flattens out look out for some rocks on the far side of the stream in the valley which marks the crossing point with some visible paths beyond.

In addition, there was the old Lliw Forge where at this time agricultural implements and ladles for the copperworks at Landore were being made.
They failed in a very short time, and after a period of idleness, the works were taken over and re-started by William Lewis and his sons, with such a measure of success that work people and their families were attracted from the older tinplate districts around Swansea and Llanelli.
